ibn? type-o, that? Bar is son-of, Yeshua is Jesus. Been reading "Jesus Family Tomb" have you? Fascinating hypothesis...interesting possibility. Makes me want to throttle the idiots who buried the bone fragments that were IN the burial boxes.....can you imagine what could have been done with those forensically?! It wouldn't matter if it was Jesus or Joe Blow....this would have been a first century FAMILY and they could have put faces to names.....two THOUSAND years after....it blows my mind - and the possibility is now lost because the bones have been buried now in a mass grave when the site was first found. Grrrr. Anyway, details are on the site listed as source...

exactly what gratvol said. They didn't have last names then so they referred to people by the father or head of the household. Joseph obviously took the role of father for Jesus growing up.

It is supposed to be a Hebrewized name for Jesus.
Which is funny considering that it means Jesus son of Joseph, and Christian theology teaches Joseph was not Jesus' father.
