I was never told that, I just realized it, at some point.
We used to leave milk and cookies at the dinner table, for Santa, before we (my baby brother and I) went to bed. The next morning, the glass of milk was empty, and there were crumbles all over the table. :)
I absolutely love Christmas, and most traditions associated with it!! :)
Thank you for the lovely question, and the good memories, ((((((Uncle))))))!! :) :)

I knew there wasn't a Santa immediately. The multiple mall Santas and bell-ringing Santas were a tip off, but I really didn't buy the man sliding down our thin pipe chimney--magic didn't seem like a good answer. I remember explaining to my grandmother at 4 why Santa wasn't real. She said, "Well if Santa isn't real the presents with the from Santa cards on them would be going away. I was a little too materialistic at that age, and I sold my integrity for a Fischer Price airport and an Evel Knievel motorcycle toy. I couldn't keep up the ruse at 6 my parents saw through my facade. I just always knew.

Actually I never really believed in Santa Clause in the first place. Santa's hand writing always looked like my Dad's and every year Santa's eyes and shape were different. But I played along for my parents sake.
Today I teach my kids about Saint Nicholas (the basis for Santa Clause) and about Jesus Christ since Christmas is a celebration of His birth.

Growing up my parents never took me to church and one weekend I begged them to let me go to church with my uncle it was around christmas time. Since I was only 5 I had to go to sunday school and I was talking to my cousin about what I wanted Santa Claus to give me for christmas and the nun told me that there was no santa claus that it was my parents and that the true meaning of christmas was about Jesus and not some fat man dressed in a red suit. Needless to say I never went back and I went home crying. :-(

I was never encouraged to believe in Santa Claus. Even when I was a kid, I thought the idea was ridiculous. I was the kid in kindergarten who saddened the other kids by telling them there's no Santa Claus.

I was never told by my parents that Santa is not real. Sure, I heard it from other kids, but like I'd believe them, right? I figured it out on my own after an evening of eavesdropping.

No way! The kids at school were always telling me he wasn't real but I never believed it - I thought they were just stupid, and that it was I who knew the truth!
I only found out he wasn't real when I woke up in the middle of the night one Christmas Eve and heard my parents putting out the presents. I was crushed, I couldn't believe it. In that moment all of the magic of Christmas seemed to be gone. I was 14, so I guess I lasted longer than most!
Of course now I know presents isn't all that Christmas is about. But I still wish he was real. Either that or I wish I still thought he was.

I barely remember starting to doubt, but I vividly remember when I had no doubt and came flying down the stairs to slide under the tree and see what Santa had left. I was the oldest, so my dad just started including me in setting up the toys for my younger brother and sister. I guess it was his way of trying to keep some fun in the game.

Nobody had to tell me Santa Claus didn't exist. I figured it out when I didn't get a teddy bear for Christmas and that was all I wanted.

My parents decided they would tell me Santa didn't exist the first time I asked them. When I was three, I came and declared, "Santa isn't real, is he?" They were surprised I asked so quickly but told me the truth. I was cool with that.
