Military Governor of Cuba 1900-1902 (Brig Gen); documented relation of mosquitoes to malaria
CC Philippines Division during Philippines War then CC Dept of the East
1910: Army Chief of Staff (only medical officer ever)
- Strengthened General Staff
and firmly established Army COS as senior officer of the Army
- Instrumental in developing the maneuver division and the mobile army concept resulting in first truly combined arms divisions
Laid foundations of ROTC

Chesty Puller didn't go to West Point, he came from there. He grew up West Point, Virginia and was the greatest General, not just of the 20th century, but in the countries history.
My 2 favorite quotes:
"The mail service has been excellent out here, and in my opinion this is all that the Air Force has accomplished during the war."
"Our Country won't go on forever, if we stay soft as we are now. There won't be any AMERICA because some foreign soldiery will invade us and take our women and breed a hardier race!"

Lieutenant General Lewis "Chesty" Puller, United States Marine Corps. He won 5 Navy Crosses and one Distinguished Service Cross (Army verison of the Navy Cross) (second highest awards for valor, just below the Medal of Honor) in a Marine Corps career that spanned from August of 1918 until November of 1955. He fought in Hati, Nicaragua, World War II, and Korea. Overall, he is the most decorated Marine in the history of the Corps. He had less than one year in the Virginia Military Institute before he quit to enlist as a Private in the Marines.
Some of his quotes include:
All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us...they can't get away this time."
Remember, you are the 1st Marines! Not all the Communists in Hell can overrun you!"
"A Marine who won't ****, won't fight!"

I can only think of "Chesty" Puller.
"Take me to the brig; I want to see real Marines".
"All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us...they can't get away this time."
Another person that comes to mind is of "Old Gimlet Eye" ; every Marine knows who I'm talking about.
(Hint - His name is General Smedley Butler, winner of TWO Congressional Medals Of Honor, one in Veracruz, the other one in Haiti. Only two men ever won the CMH twice, and both were Marines; the other one was SGM Daniel Daly)
