I'm looking for a bike, and this one looked perfect for me:
http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/bikes/mountain/1266/29365/
(Giant Anthem Advanced)

Unfortunately, this bike costs over $6000. The reason I picked this is because it's a full suspension bike, and they describe the bike as having "outright speed, razor-sharp handling and ultra light weight." Are there any alternatives to this in the $1,400 range? Also, if that isn't possible, anything like that with a hard tail? Thanks a bunch, Brian

That bike is a full race model. You will be MUCH better off with a bike that has fewer carbon fiber parts and 1 step lower components if you plan on having it a long time.

You might want to look at Iron Horse. They sponsor the 2 fastest people on the planet... and they are great bikes.

Giant do a cheaper version, the anthem 2 its cheaper but may still be out of your price range.
The anthem is a short travel mountain bike designed for xc racing and endurance events and is a good bike if you want something quick.
But its worth pointing out that if your a beginner, it may not be ideal as the carbon fibre frame of the Advanced model, which is stiff and strong can form hairline cracks in the resin, which bonds the fibres together as the result of a crash. causing potential failure of the frame when its under stress. This is true of all carbon fibre frames, but over the years the technology came a long way.
The Giant Trance may be worth looking at.
The best thing to do, may be to buy a few mountain bike magazines and look at last minute offers you may find a last year model anthem that's in your price range.
I bought my Scott from evanscycles.com and saved quite a bit of money, and also buy all of my upgrades and parts on the Internet from chainreactioncycles.com. Its worth a look for ideas.

Well.. marketing lingo always go like that. So, don't get tangled too easily just because of that.

Having said that, Giant offers other models of the Anthem a lot cheaper than that, maybe not as light, but pretty good.

Maybe you will start seeing 07 end of year offers around, so search around.

test ride different brands. To me, Giants "feel" top heavy.
Cannondales feel smooth and Specialized feel fast. Try different rides. My Epic is perfect for me.
The fastest riders in the world would be the fastest riders even if they rode a Huffy.
Go for what feels good after you test a few.
Not what works for the pro's
