I had a professor that I babysat for in college--her instructions were that I could put Julian in a time out--as long as it was in the bathroom. Thinking, of course, there were no distractions in the bathroom, I was surprised when, hving earned a time out, Julian became singing to himself andwashing his hand,s brushing his teeth, drowning action figures and so on! Time out doesn't always work, because kids find a way to entertain themselves.
If it were my kid, I would send her to her room first, tell her to consider her actions. After about twenty minutes, I would go in, ask her to tell me why she did it, where she learned it, and what she thinks the consequences should be. Consider what she says--perhaps she didn't know it was wrong, maybe she saw the neighbor do it or some stranger in the store--and decide what to do according to that. Also, explain that it is not nice, polite, or at all a good thing to flip the bird, not just t hermother, but at ANYONE.

Okay, I actually did that once. My mom was napping and wouldn't tell me where her manicure set was, and I was going to the movies in half an hour. She finally yelled at me to get out close the door and leave her alone. I could have sworn I was all the way in the hallway but apparently I was wrong. Shot her the finger. Never seen my mother move faster in my life. She jumped up caught my arm and yelled at me. She said that she had NEVER been so disrespected in her life, and by her own daughter? Ohhh no I don't have to take that, especially from the likes of you little girl! She marched me to the phone made me call my friends mother and EXPLAIN to her why she should not come pick me up.... then marched me to my room and told me that I could sit there at my desk and write two essays. One on proper uses for ones fingers, and the other about how important honoring thy mother and father is. Then she slammed the door. Yea this all happened in I swear what felt like 30 seconds. I was stunned, and um yea I never did it again! That was over ten years ago! Haha Good luck

Wow! All of the answers so far sound like they assume that the 10-yr-old knows exactly what it means to flip someone the bird. I seriously doubt that my daughter would actually know that. Now, she may have seen someone do it and know that it made the recipient really mad. So, she may someday do that just to try to make me mad.
Anyway..... my first approach to things like this is always to explain the literal definition of the word or gesture they just used. Then ask if that is what she intended to communicate to me. Usually the answer here is "no" and that's the end of it... we never encounter it again. If the answer is "yes" then we talk about what made her feel that way.
In this discussion, we also talk about the attitude behind unacceptable words or gestures as well. Most of the time it's attitude that's offensive more than the actual word.

Offer her an opportunity to apologize and be grounded from everything for a week. If she refuses, remove everything except the mattress from her room and let her earn each item back with respectful behavior. Nip this in the bud now or you will regret it soon.

There would be a 10 year old RED moon shining brighter then ever that night! I have a 10 year old daughter, if she tried that, her bare tush would be over my lap getting it like never before. That's just totally uncalled for.

i agree with mixpix777. that really deserves a good butt smack, and grounded for a week. no computer. no video games. no phone calls. no friends over. sorry, but you totally need to nip that in the bud.
btw I'm totally proud of all the parents that responded with "taking things away" and being grounded, or spanked. a few years ago we'd be hearing "have a sit down with her, and talk about how it makes her feel when you send her to her room. let her express herself". the power seems to be back with the parents..finally.

Tell her that her behaviour was inappropriate. Ground her and take away something she cares about. Must stay calm as they feed off your anger.
Yelling just makes them yell back when they get older.
BTW. Do you flip people the bird?

A good swat on the butt is necessary - plus take privileges away from her until she can show some respect!!!
