Well I would think if the trans went out then the reverse wouldnt work either, Did anybody work on it recently,, I am wondering if a Vacuum line came off, also on the passenger side of the transmission there is a shift modulator that has a vacuum line connected to it, have you been driving off road or in a rough terrain, ? Also I would wonder when you shift into drive or 2 or 1 does it feel the same in the shift lever ? does the orange gear indicator needle still line up if you put it in drive, if not, Im thinking maybe your linkage may just need an adjustment, if it lines up then I would check the vacuum lines, and those are OK then yea, you need to take it into a shop for diagnoses

Unfortuneately, the truck I think will have to be towed (unless you like driving in reverse) to a shop for proper diagnosis... My guess as someone said, something let loose in the transmission and is binding the engine up when applied in any forward gears.
Hard to diagnose like this (click and clack make it look so easy) .. as I can't examine it for what it's doing but like the other fellow mechanic .. if the fluid level is in the normal range when running in neutral (park actually) .. you have internal issues probably..sorry
Also the recall doesn't affect the issue you are talking about at all. It's a safety device to kill the cruise control if the brake lights don't work... if you have a factory installed cruise control, it's usually included.....

My friend, with the problems you are giving, it is going to be hard to give you a accurate diagnosis of what your problem is unless you take it to a reputable mechanic. There is definitely something going on with your transmission. By the way, just a friendly note. Ford currently has a recall on many of their vehicles, many of the rangers are under this recall, it is the speed sensor disconnect. Call your local Ford dealer and give them your VIN number, they will tell you exactly if your Ranger is affected.

Take it to the shop. Ford had an issue a while back where the torque convertor tried to lock up as soon as you put it in any forward gear and would kill the engine. Not sure this is the problem, but sounds awfully familiar......

Check the fluid level. If it`s ok, then the only way it will move is with a tow truck. Sounds like the trans is on vacation.
