I'm a teenager, so as a result I'm expected to spend a lot of time commenting people's photos on facebook and myspace. I'm habitually grammatically correct when I leave these comments, as opposed to typing without using caps, or shortening the word "you" to the letter "u". It's been worrying me lately that I seem pretentious when I do this, and that's the last kind of impression I want to give off. Can you tell me your opinion? Thank you so much, 'cause it's REALLY bugging me.

Thank you all for helping me out! It's definitely been a confidence booster, if nothing else.

Absolutely not. It may look pretentious to some people, but I think those people are the kind of people who generally malign education knowledge anyway.

For example... Have you ever had anyone insult you for being intelligent... it just never works out.

"Oooo, yer usin dem big words... ooooo, yer all smart n stuff."

Pretty stupid, right? Who listens to people like that? Who cares what aggressively ignorant people think about you? (Just be on the lookout for mobs of them carrying torches and farming implements!)

Nobody likes a pompous @$$, but that is a different issue altogether. Since you obviously care about the impression you send, would you rather be improperly judged as an intelligent jerk, or a stupid one, based on the language and grammar you use? Some people will think you're a jerk, anyway, so you might as well come across as someone who can like, actually, like, form whole, like, actual sentences and junk.

No it definitely does not. Here I am to trying to do my best to avoid grammatical errors. I think a grammatically correct statement is much more pleasant than one that is full of mistakes. Also, people are likely to have a good impression of you. A grammatically sound sentence will also make a deeper impact when you are putting forward your point.

I used to have this feeling that people feel I am pretentious when I use complete sentences or words, but I think that I'm only doing myself justice by practising proper English. Hence, keep this "tradition" alive. I am, so let's do it. :)

Don't be weak.

If you're worried that other people will get a bad impression of you because you display proper grammar and intelligence when writing, then you are being weak by letting the insignificant opinions of others alter your strength and character.

Why should you or anyone be ashamed of competence?

If the content of your writing is condescending, snobby, or insulting to others, then perhaps people may indeed detect an heir of pretentiousness that is deserved.

However, anyone who ridicules you or anyone else who displays competence (in anything) are just insecure individuals who are jealous of your skills.

Never let the opinions of anyone cause you to "lower" yourself and your capabilities.

The world is full of wonderful, supportive, and educated individuals who appreciate your competencies and will encourage you to develop them further.

Be strong and be positive.

Yes the opinions of your parents, family, and closest friends matters the most. Just think about it. Would they encourage you to dumb down or weaken yourself? No. That is what matters in life. The people you care about and the people who care most about you.

Not the miscellaneous nobodies who will attempt to bring you down.

Good luck!

i try really hard to be grammatically correct because if you take the time to type grammatically correct, you will also speak grammatically correct. i don't need to sound like an idiot, i'm already blonde and people don't take me seriously as it is. to lose some of the pretentiousness, i type in all lowercase letters. this could also be attributed to me being too lazy to hit "shift".

Well, I'm a grammarian so I'm proud of you for appreciating (the English) language in not destroying it with incoherence, misspellings, grammatically incorrect sentences and general laziness. I only see writing as pretentious when one uses 'big words' that are either scientific jargon, out-of-place in casual places of communication (such as yahoo answers), and as every other word so one must constantly use a dictionary to get through a few sentences in an hour. I am on your side.
You will be much more well prepared to write resumes and cover letters.
The goal of writing is to communicate - to move information between people. If I have to interpret all the things you mentioned, not to mention substituting numbers for syllables, I loose interest, and nothing is communicated.
Hang in there!

No, no, you are not annoying. It is actually good that you are typing grammatically correct. I often have a harder time reading the not-so-grammatically-correct messages people type, so in my opinion, it is good. :)

Teenagers really shouldn't use words like pretentious for starters. I think being grammatically correct might be okay but it definitely would make you seem out of place with your internet friends. The internet has it's own lingo and you ARE being grammatically incorrect if you are not following the rules of the medium you are using. Besides, why waste time with all those extra keystrokes?
