Cavalier King Charles is medium size (14 lbs) & gets
along with my cat real well. They actually sleep together.
He is very smart, affectionate & playful.

These aren't too big but labradoodles are very popular now. They're a mix between a standard poodle and lab. Personally, I don't like them because the ones I've met are neurotic and very high energy. Standard Poodles are pretty tall though so they're taller and leaner than a lab.

Otherwise you may try a St. Bernard mix. They're gentle giants. Other suggestions: Newfoundland and Great Pyrenees

Commonly breeds with labs?....Hmmm..

Here are some of my picks for a medium/large size dog that is playful, gentle, and good with children.

Border Collie - energetic, intelligent, keen, alert, and responsive. The breed is highly trainable and extremely intelligent, always willing to train it's master if given the slightest command. Make sure you also give the dog some sort of exercises be it agility or training or else they can become lethargic and miserable.

Golden Retriever - friendly, reliable, and trustworthy. The breed isn't normally haughty or timid with other dogs and is a reliable pet with children.

Rhodesian Ridgeback - the breed is devoted and even temepered although sometimes reserved toward strangers. It can endure rough-housing by small children and is an overall happy dog.

Alaskan Malamute - an affectionate, friendly, intelligent breed. He is a loyal, devoted companion, playful in invitation, but generally dignified and slightly arrogant with maturity.

Anatolian Shepherd - Alert and intelligent, calm and observant. Instinctively protective, the breed is courageous and highly adaptable. He is very loyal and responsive. Slightly territorial, he is a natural guard.

Boxer - intelligent, loyal, affectionate, and tractability to discipline make him a highly desirable companion.

Mastiff - A combination of grandeur and good nature, courage and docility. Dignity, rather than gaiety, is the Mastiff's correct demeanor.

Saint Bernard - They commonly get along very well with other dogs and love high amounts of attention. They are very gentle giant that can be extremely fond of children (though smaller children should be supeervised because of the dogs size) and are loyal to their family.

Siberian Husky - friendly and gentle, but also alert and outgoing. He does not display the possessive qualities of the guard dog, nor is he overly suspicious of strangers or aggressive with other dogs. Some measure of reserve and dignity may be expected in the mature dog. His intelligence, tractability, and eager disposition make him an agreeable companion and willing worker.

Schnauzer - friendly and gentle, but also alert and outgoing. He does not display the possessive qualities of the guard dog, nor is he overly suspicious of strangers or aggressive with other dogs. Some measure of reserve and dignity may be expected in the mature dog. His intelligence, tractability, and eager disposition make him an agreeable companion and willing worker.

Dalmation - very playful with children which makes them an all around family dog. Famed for their intelligence, independent, and kind-natured. But make sure your train them or they can become territorial.

Australian Shepherd - intelligent, active dog with an even disposition; he is good natured, seldom quarrelsome.

Collie - known to be generally sweet and protective. They are generally easy to train due to a high level of intelligence and a willingness to please. They are also very playful and gentle around children.

Good Luck with your adoption! I hope you find the right dog for you and your family!

I love pitbulls they make the sweetest pets ever. There are so many out there that need good homes, but if you arent ready to spend enough time with your dog stay away form this breed cause the have a bad enough rap already and god knows it doesnt need to get any worse

Maybe a Labradoodle. Really no breed normally mates with Labs with the exception of that breed. Or you could go to petfinder.com, type in "Labrador", and you'll hit a ton of results--Labs and Lab mixes alike!

I LOVEEEEE Boxers! There usually are plenty of lab boxerish mixes available for adoption. Boxers are loving and comical. They love to be active and have an active companion. They are very devoted to their family and when raised with children are very good with them. I would never own another breed, i will always have a boxer in my household.

Danes are wonderful just adding that. My favorite medium breed is the Dalmatian and LARGE breed is the Mastiff.

I think you should go to the humane society or the animal shelter- your new best friend is waiting there for you! I am sorry to hear about your lab passing- though he might help you pick out a new friend!

Newfoundlands. Tall, dark, and adorable.
If your looking for a common cross, try German Shepards, Poodles, or Border Collies(I know they're not that big, but...)
My Aunt and Uncle have a Labradoodle who's mostly poodle, and at three 3/4 feet at the shoulder. Enormous.
