First, to erase your identity---they aim to re-make you into their new creation, part of a uniform group of soldiers.
Your individuality is broken down completely, so they can build it up into what they want.
Also, short hair in soldiers is something the Ancient Romans insisted on (lots of their opponents had long hair and long beards)----very short hair makes it impossible for your enemy to grab your head in a hand to hand fight.

Wow, what do hospitals do when you are getting a procedure done on your head? shave the local area. What happens if you in the boondock and you engage the enemy and suddenly you have an injury to your head. How would the corpsman see the injury and apply first aid treatment if you had a overgrowth of hair that was not evenly graduated and less than 3 inches on the top. What would happen if infection set in because you have a dirty scalp. When you're in the field it is very hard to take a nice hot shower/bath lol. I hope your common sense could deduct the importance of a crew cut while conducting milops.

For uniformity and also so that people don't come into boot camp with a head full of lice.
They don't do it for women obviously though. For women it's gotta be near, but no longer than the collar or something like that. Again, for uniformity.
By the way, have you ever shaved your hair off before? If you do, you'll know how EASY it is to live with such short hair. You can shower in like a second. You wake up looking great... No bedhead.

I'd say they shave your head in the beginning for...
A: Uniformity- So everyone looks the same
B: Hygiene- In the beginning of training, you get about a 30 second shower for at least the first week if you're lucky. That's how my training was. They say that privates smell. Well, they do because when you hardly get water from a shower head- much less efficient soap... you're going to stink. Hair is only one more thing to not get washed in that 30 seconds!

4-IT TAKES AWAY THE OLD YOU AND NOW YOUR NEW PERSON TO MOLD A SOLDIER-GONE IS THE SOCIAL STRUCTURE OF INDIVIDUALITY
5-I HAVE SEEN MANY WOMEN WITH HAIR TO THE WAIST AND BEYOND CUT THEIR HAIR TO A SHORT PIXIE CUT OVER THE EARS AND WALK OUT OF THE SALON A NEW CONFIDENT WOMAN WHERE BEFORE I HAD A YOUNG GIRL HIDDEN BEHIND LOCKS OF SHELTERING
5. HAIR GROWS BACK-ONE LADY CUT 5' OFF IN 1988 AND WHEN I SAW HER AGAIN SHE HAD IT GROWN BACK OUT1996. A buzz cut is uniformed. It is sanitary. It is time saving. It helps avoid lice, crabs, and other critters that are inclined to invade the bady.

short hair doesnt attract lice. when youre out in the field hygiene is important. time is important too. its no good if you have to comb your hair before going to battle.
long hair on men looks stupid, as do those goofy metrosexual haircuts with the perms and different colors.
