Matthew 24:24, "For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect."

It means that a position of respect and power is not necessarily a guarantee of somebody's trustworthiness.

This applies even outside of religious debate.

If a bearded man came to you and said he was Christ, would you have any reason to believe that? Even if he performed a miracle, it is still no guarantee of Christhood.

Basically it means trust only your own self, as it is the only thing you know you can be sure of. If you do this, you cannot wander from faith, because your faith will be constant for as long as you live.

By the way, where did you get that from?

What i LOVE about this question is your arrogant assumption that you are not the decieved one. Maybe the devil works by convincing someone that they are part of the 4% that REALLY know whats going on. Maybe YOU should really think about that. You are possibly ( and I say this with a certain amount of reverence) the most self satisfied egotistical person I have run into in a long time. Heres a tip: I am as certain that I am right as you are, and I feel COMPLETELY different about religion...uh oh one of us has been DECEIVED! but which one?????( thats funny, I think I know the answer too, but Ill bet we don't agree yet again. Good luck and have fun.

To me, it is referring to the end times, false prophets, false religious teachings, etc. A perfect example is the Republican Party which has been taken over by radical anti-gay activists and false prophets.

We know that homophobia is sinful and immoral, because it leads to harm against gay people, even murder. Christ commands us to treat others as we want to be treated. Something which harms others violates this commandment.

The Republican Party and its associated anti-gay, pro-bigotry allies want us to believe that promoting homophobia and taking away the civil rights of gay Americans is loving, virtuous and Christian. This false teaching is even accepted by the President of the U.S. (Even the most elect shall be deceived.)

It's saying that even the supposedly brightest of the theologians will fall for the deception of the anti-christ.

To me it means that the second greatest mind of all eternity who is Satan can deceive anyone he chooses. He is the Prince of Darkness and the ruler of this world. As long as we are of the flesh we are his.
