I was just cleaning my dog and saw that she had a huge number of ticks in her ears although she's been recently treated with Frontline and with a shot to prevent mange that usually kills fleas and ticks also. I can't understand how she has ticks in her ears and I don't know if I can put tick medicine in her ears or not. A neighbor suggested rubbing alcohol, another suggested pulling them out one by one (DISGUSTING) and another neighbor said vaseline will smother them. What do you guys think? Can I put Frontline Tick Repellant in her ears or are her ears too sensitive for such strong medicine?

GREAT ANSWERS!
A lot is approximately 50...absolutely smothered in ticks...too numberous to count!
The nearest vet is over 150 miles away. I live in a very remote area and must do most dog care including shots myself.
I love the idea of treating my yard and will try that. I also know I should have her examined for tick related diseases soon.
I think I'll start by washing her ears out with hydrogen peroxide as that seems to be a common consensus. I'll also cover them in some vaseline as that's easy enough but as far as picking out so many ticks myself, I'll just wait and see what happens by morning.
Poor dog. I agree, I would be going nuts if I had that in my ears! A good treat and lots of love it will be!!!
Thanks everyone!

HEY YOU! I'm not a wuss! Pulling so many could easily cause an infection! I'm amazed she can hear with that many bugs in her ears! Its not just a few!!! She doesn't have any on other parts of her body...just her ears. I don't think she'll lie still for as long as it will take to do a surgery like this. I'M SHOCKED AND HAD NO IDEA!!
It was less than a month ago that I checked her and there was nothing!!!

Put the Vaseline on them and when they fall off, burn them or drown them in alcohol.Don't crush them, because they can release bacteria when crushed. Then get some Frontline Plus.Or,you could mix a little bit of the tick repellent in with the Vaseline before you put it on them.Clean her ears well afterward.
Hey,I was just thinking,do you have any ear mite medication? I was looking at the ingredients and it's pyrethrins, which is also used to kill fleas and ticks. So,if you have any,you could put that in the dog's ears;it just might help.

most times you have to grab the tick with tweezers so the whole bug will come out,if not a lot of times the head will stay in the skin and cause infections.try warmed up tweezers.put alcohol on the tick, then light the end of the tweezers with a match and carefully pull out the tick with the hot pinchers.do not touch the dogs skin, just the tick.. they are hard to get out sometimes. after the ticks are removed clean the dogs ears with antisecptic or diluted peroxide.repeat for a few days and make sure the ears are not infected. call the vet if you can't get the ticks out or the ears start smelling. good luck

hi Luckie..heres some info i didnt see mentioned.. ticks are prety unique critters..they can survive 15 - 20 years with out eating...ANY THING... truth!! Just hangin out on a blade of grass..waiting for an animal to pass by, and snag onto it with there little feet and legs.
Popping a tick can spread what ever they have ever been exposed to,,, or the animal they have attached themselves to, as well. Pullin a tick from a host is simple.. especilly once the tick has been hooked up for a while. Be brave Lucky..you can do this.
Finely, heres the clincher..where one tick is, there are hundreds...maybe thousands of others, and they arent all going to be mature...some are very very tiny..we call um seed-ticks..and there might be litterly millions of them from hatches in the vacinity. Scorpions eat them, so do some spiders, but ticks arent exactly 'mobile' critters, so they dont get cought like flys or the likes..they just hang out till some other critter comes along and bumps into what ever they are clinging too.
no matter what meds you get, the dog will get them again, they just wont survive long once they hook onto him. AND...believe me...there ARE other ticks on your dog...look carefully ..especilly on his belly, and between his legs. They are not very big at first...they get big after they been atached a few days.
The reason you seen the one's in his ears is because he has chewed most of the others he could reach when they started itching him..but he cant chew his own ears.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://bitly.im/nWVUp
The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.
The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.
Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

DONT PUT PEROXIDE IN HER EARS THIS IS BAD!!!!!! SO IS ALCOHOL!
If you have something like mineral oil or baby oil- that is better. Get Frontline Plus. That will work the best. It will take about 24 hours to kill the ticks on her. Frontline also has a spray- Topspot- Iknow it gets rid of fleas well- I am not sure about ticks- we dont carry the spray. But If you can pull the ticks out with tweezers, make sure you get the whole thing out and wear gloves. There are many tick born diseases that humans can get as well as dogs- Lymes, Erlichea, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, etc- so be very careful with how you handle the ticks. I rec- putting them in a bottle with alcohol- unless you want to save them to best identified and tested- in which you would want to save them in a bottle- if they are still alive- place ticks in bottle with a blade of grass with a drop of water. Most veterinarians will send the ticks out to be identified ,this is a free service- I know the state of Michigan does that for free- you can access the website www.mich.gov and search for the tick identification form. Good Luck!

Do not put frontline in her ears!
You need to take her to the vet for this one. The ticks really do need to be picked out one by one, but that is a very sensitive area, and the vet might need to numb it or sedate the dog. The dog might not sit still for it.
Why aren't you using Advantage or Advantix? Frontline is great for a while, but it obviously is not working where you live, and sometimes you need to rotate the products. Don't buy it off ebay from someone selling it at a discount. You need to buy the genuine product not a counterfit knock-off that doesn't work. You should buy it at your vets office or from a reputable dealer.
Call the vet ASAP and get your dog in there. This is not good. Imagine them in your ears tonight when you are trying to go to sleep...not a fun thought is it? Your doctor will also need to check your dog for lymes disease, rocky mountain spotted fever, or other diseases and make sure the dog hasn't contracted anything from the ticks.
Give your dog a treat and tell it you are sorry.

You need to put that dog on Advantix monthly instead of Frontline, since you have such a tick problem, but for now you have to get them off, put peroxide on a pad and rub the area after the ticks are off.
You really need to get that poor dog to a vet, this sounds overwhelming and ticks can carry disease, she needs to be looked at by a vet.
