Like narrow-minded, ignorant, impressionable Americans responding to government propaganda about the "threat" of Mexican-American immigrants, the Sodomites' sin may have been greed and cruel, inhospitable behavior toward strangers in their land.
So the Lord may punish us, in a similar manner.
From the Wikipedia article on "Sodom":
A few classical Jewish texts do not specifically indicate that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because the inhabitants were homosexual, or sexually deviant from what was recorded as God's law of natural order, but rather, they were destroyed because the inhabitants were generally morally depraved and uncompromisingly greedy. Though homosexual acts were seen as an abomination, the people of Sodom and Gomorrah were guilty of many other sins as well. Rabbinic writings affirm that the Sodomites also committed economic crimes, blasphemy and bloodshed[1]. One of the worst was to give money or even gold ingots to beggars, but to inscribe their names on them, and then subsequently refuse to sell them food. However, the unfortunate stranger would not be allowed out of the city, and would end up starving. After his death, the people who gave him the money would reclaim it.
A rabbinic tradition, described in the Mishnah, postulates that the sin of Sodom was related to property: Sodomites believed that "what is mine is mine, and what is yours is yours" (Abot), which is interpreted as a lack of compassion. Another rabbinic tradition is that these two wealthy cities treated visitors in a sadistic fashion. One major crime done to strangers was almost identical to that of Procrustes in Greek mythology. This would be the story of the "bed" that guests to Sodom were forced to sleep in: if they were too short they were stretched to fit it, and if they were too tall, they were cut up.

Perhaps Sodom does mean burnt but sodomy was derived from Sodom and the men of the town wanted Lot's two male vistors to be sent out to have sex with, even turning down Lot's virgin daughters.
Yes it's probably a factor for some people, but others tend to condemn things that don't fit into their narrrow morals or norms.
Lastly, I don't but much (or any) stock in made up stories like this one.

I'm no bible scholar and i don't remember the phrase word for word, but i do remember the general jist of the story of sodom.
I know there was a phrase that went something like: 'and men called out to other men to come lay with them' which is why alot of people believe the story has to do with sodomy. The bible doesn't list specifics; it's meant to allow people to interpret it in their own way and apply it to their own situations. There is no right and wrong with interpreting it. Some believe the story reflects homosexuality, some believe it reflects God's fury, everyone has the right to interpret it different ways.

Sodomy as a word is derived from Sodom ("the city of sin".) I suspect this is your confusion. In Sodom (and Gomorrah) the people ignored GOD and His commands and lived in whatever ways they chose. Their sins included sexual perversions of every sort (not just homosexual) including animals, children, objects etc. They also were worshiping false gods and sacrificing to them as well.
Think modern day Las Vegas crossed with a few pervert Senators and you might get a better picture of what went on.

What can I say? It seems to me that every thing has already been said. There are many theories as to Why, What, Where and How, but as far as I can find out, there is no proof that Sodom and Gamora ever exisited. Oh well, I suppose that the word sodomy was coined after the Bible Name, Sodom. But, what do I know. …Mawdy

The meaning of the word Sodom may have originated from something else but the word sodomy did come from Sodom. It was one of the sexual acts they were regularly practicing. When a messanger from Abraham came to Lot (Nephew of Abraham), who was living in Sodom at the time, the mobs gathered around his house and demanded him to hand over the messagers so they have have their ways with them (sodomize). Thus the word originated.

In Ezekiel it says their sin was arrogance and not feeding the poor.
Hating homosexuals is a problem, but I think the bigger problem is the harm some of them are doing themselves in the form of irresponsible sexual behavior. Read Tammy Bruce, a lesbian who speaks out against many in the homosexual community often not using protection and having promiscuous numbers of partners.

Here in Tennessee we have some rather pequliar names for places, derived from facts.
One such place is called "Stinking Creek". It is a little stream crossing the highway (I 40) and there is an odor.
Nuff said?

The sin of Sodom was violence - rape and aggression. So many believe otherwise because they want to be spoon-fed an easy, judgmental answer.
