I have a temp opportunity that may last for about six months but its far from where i live (3 hours) and I also have a entry level opportunity near where I live - pays a dollar less, but generally the same work and I can have time to volunteer and gain experience for my resume. What should I do.

Unless gas prices are much lower than they were earlier today, driving for three hours costs more than $1, so you will have more money, after paying for gas, if you take the job that is closer.

This one seems like an easy call. There's no way that $1 an hour extra is going to pay even your expenses for the 3 hour travel, let alone the time loss. Take the job closer to home.
