ok, my dog has been doing this for a long long time, ok so here it goes:
when i am not around or when other people are around, my dog creeps inside a bathroom and when i go looking for her she runs out and has her ears back (the little innocent puppy look) and when i go inside the bathroom to go check, i find tissues and garbage out of the bin. and she tears it and i find little piecies everywhere, if it helps she is about 8-9 yrs old.she has been doing this for a long time, and i have always wonderd why she does this.

Most likely she started because something smelt good in there, now it is just a habbit. Its like a game for her, much like a puppy chewing things and digging holes. Especially if you have never punished her for doing it. Dogs are just like children.
Try removing the bin from its usual place. Put it somewhere she can't get at it. This will at least stop her from making a mess with your garbage. You should try doing something different with her, walk a different way, find a play mate in the park. It sounds like she gets bored.

Dogs are always getting into something. Why didn't you start teaching her that wasn't okay when she was younger? She's probably used to doing this since she is 8-9 years old now. Just leave the door closed and maybe you can try and stop the problem.

Dogs like to tear things up if allowed to. She knows she is doing a no no but she will risk it anyway.
Leave a sheet of newspaper on the bathroom floor & see if she tears that up instead. Put the bin up, or close the bathroom door.

Maybe she finds the bathroom trash can smell especially appealing. To counteract this, spray the can with an edible but gross-smelling scent.

well, if you have blood in the garbage... like used band aids... animals are usually attracted to blood... so your dog may smell blood.
Another thing is the attraction to edible substance. i.e. leftovers, wrappers with scents of foods, etc.
well, i have a 8-9 year old dog too, and she does this a lot... so it maight be natural... but i thing she is attracted to blood or food. hope it helped you out... LOL C YA

I would guess she is probably just bored and trying to amuse herself by digging through the garbage and tearing it up.

i have a weiner dog that LOVES to do the same. It drives me crazy always having to clean it up. There is nothing wrong with them doing this though.

I have one chihuahua that loves to shred toilet paper all over the house. We call her the instigator because she causes all the problems.
