So, I see him in the Grocery and he knows at least who I am because I see him around, but don't know him on a very personal level. What should I do?

Of course you should say hello. CEOs are human, as witnessed by the fact he is doing his own shopping. He might welcome a smile and a greeting.

Say hello. He may wonder what is wrong if U ignore him. Don't talk about work unless he brings it up. Be polite. Keep conversation short. U both have to get the groceries home.

Always kiss butt whether on the clock or off.
Smile and nod and wait for the positive or snooty reaction.
If he's a nice CEO he'll be kind enough to respond with a smile as well. If he's a grumpy, miserly CEO who is too stuck up he will give you a Scrooge face and you will know to leave it at that. But always at least smile. Don't go to him just in case he's the stuffy type, let him be the one to approach you if it's his decision.

It wouldn't hurt for you to say hi and acknowledge him. Try making small talk for example if you see him getting a rib-eye ask/tell him "I like the rib-eye cut", "are you a meat person", "have you try a different cut such as filet, b/c its my favorite". That way you guys share a connection, via meat :), and people tend to like other people if they have stuff in common.

Be sincere and honest, do not butt kiss! They can tell the difference!

I would definitely say hi, assuming he's NOT such a stiff neck CEO.

Whatever you do, do not kiss butt.

If you kiss butt and come across as a yes-man, then your career is over. A CEO needs people who shoot straight, tell it like it is, and give honest feedback. A CEO has no use for butt kissers and yes-men.

I wouldn't go out of my way to go over to him, after all he is performing a personal errand and the last thing he wants is to take time out of a busy schedule for small talk. If you pass one another in an isle, certainly acknowledge him and follow his lead. If he stops to talk great, if he keeps on moving so should you
