Hi pal !
In the USA, it is offensive to smoke EVERYWHERE, and people look at you as if you where a dangerous criminal.
Most of the time, they are about to call the police and have you arrested, so you can imagine what would happened if you smoked at a funeral.
The family and friends of the deceased person would think you're a rude, irreverent and outrageous guy.
Nobody would talk to you, and you wouldn't probably even be invited to eat something afterwards, which would be a pity and a great loss, because you'd miss a hell of a great lunch : Bagels, spareribs, fried chicken, carrott cake, doughnuts...Think about it before you light a fag !
Happy funeral !

PS : I hope it's only a theoretical question and nobody you know really died recently ?

In US, you should never smoke inside a building. But funeral services usually have some breaks for restroom use and smoking. I don't think that anyone could prevent you from smoking at the grave side because it is outside, but it would be considered rude to smoke while the preacher is speaking or if you have to stand close together in a large group. You are an exceptionally polite person for asking, though.

It would be up to the person that owns the funeral home if you smoke inside. I suppose if you want to smoke at the cemetary no one would say anything.
If you did smoke you should stay away from other people in case they are sensitive to smoke, it is called being considerate of others.
I would think that since a funeral only takes like 20 minutes at the most, a smoker could hold off that long.

In a wake, funeral home or church at least in New York, it's against the law to smoke. If you were smoking outside of any of these establishments it's not seen as rude. If you were at the cemetery, smoking while the burial was taking place, that would be rude and you should wait the burial is over.

i always see people smoking outside funeral homes. unless it has been posted that there is no smoking on the premises at all, it is fine. of course, do not smoke inside the building.
