Because of the way Prozac and other anti-depressants like it (Paxil, Lexapro, Zoloft, etc.) work on your brain, the chemical changes actually cause you to have a desire to eat more, and eat more unhealthy food.... most of the time without you noticing. This happened to me, so my doctor suggested I keep a food diary, and he was right. I didn't realize I was eating more, and eating worse things. All SSRI anti depressants can cause this.

On the other hand, if over eating, or poor eating habits are a symptom of your depression, then taking an anti-depressant can get that under control and you may actually lose weight. That's why you will see BOTH "Weight loss, and weight gain" as the potential side effects on any anti-depressant.

Some are known to cause more weight gain than others. If you need to stay on one, but are concerned about the weight, I would ask your doctor about either Lexapro or Prozac. They have been shown to be the most weight-neutral.

Yes, you can gain weight on Prozac. Around 20 pounds seems to be the average for people who gain, from what I've researched. I've had a terrible time with trying to lose the weight, which crept on so slowly over the course of 9 months that I didn't notice it all that much until my clothes absolutely did not fit anymore. I don't even recognize my own body. I feel disgusting.

I stopped taking Prozac four months ago because of this (gaining weight is NOT a good way to keep me from being depressed -- gained weight MAKES me depressed!). I have had little luck with losing the weight so far. With weight training, cardio, and watching what I eat, I've probably only lost about 4-5 pounds so far. My clothes do feel a little bit better, and I don't look as bloated as I did, but with the routine I've been following there is no reason for me to weigh what I do right now. It's like my metabolism is going at a snail's pace. I only hope that over time it will pick up again. In the meantime, if I want to lose anymore weight, it's apparent to me that I'm going to have to be ridiculously strict about how many calories I eat per day. I've NEVER had such a difficult time losing weight! The scary thing is, if I have a few days where I eat things I know I shouldn't, I immediately feel like I've gained some weight back. It's like the weight is just "trying" to come back on.

I'm so disgusted about this, and if I had only known that I'd be faced with this problem I never would've taken it.

(Oh, and don't be fooled by the initial weight loss and the fact that you're never hungry. It doesn't last in most cases. I lost about seven pounds initially and my clothes were hanging on me. I never once felt that my appetite had increased beyond normal, yet I started to steadily gain weight month after month.)

My doctor told me that it was one of the few that would be the least likely to cause weight gain. I am going to start taking it this weekend and I hope it works. I am on Paxil now and I have gained too much weight. Hopefully this will suppress my appetite.
