Enough so you feel fit, and are happy, you should be able to enjoy a game of tag football, your young.

Well, Faliicia, sounds like you and I are very similar. We both need to lose a lot of weight. Have you looked at a BMI chart to find out what your weight should be? I hate to tell you honey, but I wouldn't say you should weigh over 130 and be healthy. I'm 5'7" 250 45 yo.

A doctor I listened to told me that it was more important to be fit. He said he'd rather you were fat and fit than inactive and skinny. Apparently, it's all about your heart. Keeping your heart healthy by eating the right stuff, exercising, keeping cholesterol down.

Some people might faint if they heard, but I'm advising you to exercise (I do Windsor pilates 3X a week for 20 min, and anyone in the house at the time has to do it with me!). I still need to do something more aerobic, but it's definitely a start. Exercising is more important than controlling your eating.

It would be best if you could do both, but for now I'd just concentrate on exercising. I think your weight will come down on its own.

Take care,

At 5'4" and 210lb your BMI is 36.
Normal weight = BMI is 18.5 to 25
Overweight = BMI is 25-30
Obesity = BMI greater than 30

Getting down to 145lb puts you at a BMI of 24.9, which is 65lb lighter than you are now. Technically health problems don't start occuring until you are in the obese category so if you could get down to around 175lb it would do you a lot of good.

The two best ways to lose body fat are diet and exercise. As a general rule, every one pound of body fat is essentially 3500 calories. To burn one pound of fat per week you must cut 500 calories/day from your diet or burn an extra 500 calories with exercise. Multiply the number of pounds by 3500, then divide the total number by the number of days that you want as a goal. I will tell you that 3-4lb is a safe maximim. You don't want to cut your caloric intake under 1200 calories, if you do you'll put your metabolism into starvation mode and you'll burn less calories no matter what you do.

To burn fat in problem areas, you should do exercises that are low impact and low resistance. The key to toning is doing things like running/walking and swimming or lifting light weights 5-10lb and doing lots of repetitions. A common mistake that females make is that they hit the stairmaster or the bicycle trying to tone their legs or lifting heavy weights to tone their arms. Since those are high resistance exercises, they serve to strengthen your muscles and make them larger. Most of the fat that you see and can pinch is on top of your muscle. Making the muscle underneath larger without aerobic exercise to help burn the fat will make your arms/legs larger. I suppose eventually you could burn the fat away with high resistance, but then you'd only have big muscular arms/legs instead of smaller ones. Squats and lunges are part of an aerobic workout so they should help you tone as well, especially your thighs.

You should also find a buddy to workout with as diet/exercise plans work better when there's a buddy to help keep you motivated.

I hope this helps.
