Yes, they sure do!!! Cesarean Sections are my FAVORITE surgery to scrub in on! They are A LOT of work, but very much worth it!!!
Typically, small breeds (like Chihuahua's, Yorkies, etc.) and breeds with big ol' heads need Cesareans (like bulldogs, boston terriers, etc.).
DP and DobieGang... speaking of Sections... I scrubbed in on a Dobie Cesarean today!!!!! 8 puppies!!! One black, one blue, one fawn, and the rest reds!!! Two of the pups were not responding so well so I literally worked on them for 30 minutes each... but they came around! It was amazing :) Thought of you two!

Almost all sections seen at the clinic here are small flat-faced breeds. Lots of times anxious moms bring in their laboring dogs full of worry, but the doctor usually calms them and just lets the b**ch labor in quiet at the clinic. Few sections are truly a medical necessity.
The uterus in a dog is shaped like a Y. Sometimes a puppy comes down each branch at the same time and the two get stuck. If Doctor H can pull one then there isn't a problem. And that is usually the case in most breeds. Honestly the breeds with problems are the "dwarf" mutations like pekes, pug, bulldogs, and other flat faced breeds.

the breed that normal need C-Sections are the ones with wide heads and narrow pelvic so the puppies can not pass through the birth canal. Like bull dogs, Bostons and French bulldogs. Also if a puppy is stuck in the birth canal.

Most smaller breed dogs like Yorkies or Chihuahuas have trouble giving birth naturally. They usually have just 2 or 3 larger puppies and usually the mothers are very small and petite! Bulldogs usually always need C-Sections because of the puppy's large head and the mother's small pelvis.

Breeds like Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Tea-Cup ANYTHINGS, some small breeds, Bull Mastiffs........there are a lot of breeds that are commonly scheduled for c-section because they have been bred with HUGE heads and a small pelvis.
It can however happen to ANY dog of any breed. Just as with humans, sometimes labor just stalls or does not progress properly and intervention is needed.
We won't even talk about the breeders that just schedule them for their own convenience!!! That happens a LOT in my breed Newfies, even though they are good whelpers.

Boston terriers need C-sections very often - they are small dogs, small hipped and cannot pass the heads of puppies through the birth canal. Toy breeds also need C-sections more often, especially if the female bred with a bigger male.

Breeds with large heads and wide chests. Or, sometimes when a puppy gets logged in the birth canal.....in some cases if a C-section is not done, the whole litter as well as the mother is at risk.

Bull dogs and other dogs with the short muzzle. If you look at them you will see that their heads are usually very round and large. Many smaller breeds need to have C-sections too.
