I might be getting a dog that was left in a car in a junk yard and I was wondering if it will be able to learn a new name since I would have no idea what it was before.
please help, thank you.

A dog can learn anything at anytime. He may still respond to the old name but will know that you call him "insert name here"

Yes The Dog Will..They Adapt Different Personalities With Different Names..So If The Dog Was Left Alone Its Probably A Good Idea To Call It By A New Name

This should be no problem. Time and consistent use of the new name will work. All of my dogs had other names while at the breeders. Samantha became Leilani. And Thor became Elvis. It is your tone of voice that locks in the name association. Whenever you use the new name, use your sweetest voice. Praise when they respond.
And GOOD FOR YOU for taking this unfortunate dog; he/she has a wonderful future with you!

Not a problem. We changed the name of a dog we adopted and she had it down in less than a week. We just started calling her the new one and rewarded her with praise and attention when she responded.

It's been 4 years. We tried calling her old name the other day and she didn't even look up.

Yes, they have no problem learning a new name. I have worked with rescue and we change dogs names all the time. Just give them lots of love and treats.

I know you have tons of answers but I just wanted to tell you that we found our dog wandering in the streets and we found the best way to teach her new name to her was to say it constantly. Every time we would talk to her or tell her to do anything we said her name first, it really didn't take her long to pick it up. Good for you rescuing this dog, good luck!!

Yes. Even if the dog is trained to respond to another name, with persistance and determination, you can re-teach the dog it's name.

Good for you, adopting a dog!
Best of luck! :o)

I had a similar problem only the dog was given to my buy misfit owners. It is simple to teach them a new name and have them obey it. Just always call it but Scruffy or whatever you choose to name it. If possible try to keep it short and sweet. :]

Yes it will learn its new name you just have to keep calling him/her by it and eventually they will get use to its new name. I would pat on my legs or something to let the dog know you are calling it though.

Yes, I adopted a grown up stray dog, and he learned his new name quickly enough.
