I've heard that putting soap in the mouth is considered corporal punishment. Are there any safe and effective alternatives?

My best friend uses vinegar. I can't use it because my son LOVES it! Hot sauce works, too!

Hot sauce? That's crazy. For what aged children?

For lots of kids this kind of intrusive discipline just drives them further into themselves and against authority.

You could be asking for ways to earn the respect and connection with a child so that they wouldn't want to swear around you. If you can't do that, then all the shoving crap in their mouths isn't going to work either.

You shouldn't use soap in the mouth. Some soaps can break down the fatty acids in the tongue and destroy taste buds. Instead try vinegar or hot sauce, or any other nasty tasting food item.

I found out accidently that my son absolutely despises the taste of the citrus listerine mouth spray. He always steals my bianca and any mints I have in my purse and I had gotten a listerine spray and he wanted it. He can't stand it and it works very well to just mention that if he says a naughty word again then he'll get a spray in his mouth. Cured his potty mouth instantly.
I've also heard of things like tabasco sauce, chili sauce, wasabi sauce but I don't like those too much since they can actually burn the lining of their mouths if they don't eat alot of spicy foods.

First of all, it is so nice to see a parent thinking about parenting choices and asking for advice. It is not always easy to ask such things.

Yes, soap in the mouth is corporal punishment.

There are so many alternatives that will actually make a person feel good about parenting, and will strengthen a loving bond between parent and child.

I am a grandma and I would never put soap ot anything in a child's mouth. Talk to them when you are calm, take a toy, let them sit in the "naughty" seat. I consider those activities abuse.

I still use soap, and it got the point across to my boys. It took two times. The first because they didn't believe me, and the 2nd they wanted to see if I would do it again. There hasn't been a 3rd. Your the parent, don't let the kid decide for you. if they swallow soap, they may get the runs, but they wont swallow much. Plus, if you give them something they like, doesn't that defeit the purpose?

My mother used a cotton swab dunked in apple cider vinegar swiped down the tounge once. It tasted HORRIBLE for at least half an hour and had no harmful side effects.

SOAP IS NOT CORPORAL PUNISHMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Corporal punishment consists of physical abuse.
Soap, vinegar or hot sauce works the best.

You can remove something fun from their daily activities as a result of bad words. For example, you can't watch a tv show if your speak like that, or no cookie if you speak like that....
