I have only had 1986 and older vehicles lol, this week we got a 1998 van. It of course has air bags and I hate to say this but I'm a little afraid of it. I heard that air bags could kill someone under 5'3, they said (think it was dateline or something) that it's like being hit by Mike Tyson (ouch). I'm only 5'0 and have to sit fairly close to the wheel.

Are they safe for someone my height?

I've only heard of children being killed by an air bag. The closer you are, the stronger the impact. You may want to check with the National Safety Council.

I'm short, too, and won't wear seatbelts if I can help it as they cut you in the neck and it messes up your ability to see by limiting your movement. (If you're not short you wouldn't realize this, though, so bear this in mind you tall people who make these moronic laws, we short people may hit you cuz we CAN'T SEE what you can wearing those things!) And these horrendous air bags are very dangerous, especially without a seatbelt, so I'm scared, too! I think you can disable them somehow though I have no idea how. I hope you never get in an accident-I was in many before air bags that I didn't get hurt in (another where I was wearing a belt and was injured for life though, so what does that tell you!), but I know if that air bag goes off you will probably get hurt. The things they try to force on us are as dangerous as not using them-and they can make statisitics show whatever they want so don't buy into that stuff either. I've personally been at the scene of 2 dfifferent accidents that would've been fatal if they were wearing their seatbelts-luckily they weren't and were just fine, but they'd be DEAD if they used the belts. (That was when I was on a rescue squad) I've heard worse things about air bags, plus they burn you badly if they break as they're full of steam. Maybe you should go back to your older cars-LOL!-I'm considering getting another old Mustang that's pre-seatbelts to avoid this crap as they don't require you wear them in old cars with just a lap belt (another stupid idea they did away with), plus no air bags!
Try not to get hit!!!!

The older ones were pretty bad, but the new ones are much better, not sure which year they fixed the problems though. Just to be safe, try not to get into an accident.

A very good question. i would make a call to my Doctor and ask or ask someone in the Automobile field. My sister in law hit a Deer and the Air bag hurt her more than the wreck. Good luck.
