I think it's kind of come under the same as why are children born with life threatening diseases are apt to be more loving and more accepting then some healthy ones.?
I think that in both, you have a person who has been through a lot of adversity , pain, and have a compassionate , loving nature that some how reaches out to others who are in need. Maybe because they have been there and they want to help others and that is their gift.

some people see that hurt and pain and resolve to do what they can to be there for others out of compassion...and some nice people get hurt because of their open and trusting nature-they haven't built the walls that more cynical people employ for protection...and there are, sadly, a number of those around us who seem to derive glee from attacking anything and anyone perceived as 'good'...some very nice people seem to unwittingly attract folks like that
