I am about a 6-10 handicap too.
I play two hybrids, a 22 and an 18-degree.
I don’t have an iron over a 5.
You probably don’t need much “workability” from the distance you are trying to hit you 3-4 irons. Right ;)
Hybrids are MUCH easier to hit out of rough.
They go higher and further.
NO brainier

As long as you hit the golf ball with a fair amount of club head speed, you may very well not need the added ability of a hybrid to get the ball into the air quickly. I'm about an 18 handicap and I still find I really miss my 3 and 4 irons (replaced with hybrids along with a new set this last spring).
I have found the thing I miss most is the feel of an iron versus the hybrid. Workability has not been a big issue, I can still move the ball left or right with hybrids, and the results are not bad with a hybrid, just kind of a muted feeling. If that doesn't bother you, the hybrid is probably the way to go.

The only real advantage is trajectory. Typically you will hit a hybrid higher than a 3 iron. For higher handicaps a 3 iron is useless. I can hit a hybrid with different trajectory so wind doesn't have that affect on me.

Hey mike the advantages are based on the type of clubs you have. If you own a set of better player irons or blades the answer is center of gravity and width of sole. Traditional irons have a higher center of gravity this allows for a more penetrating flite and less air balls. Hybrid are designed as trouble clubs and fairway clubs, The sole of these irons is wide to promote less digging and more sweeping of the ball.
Look for new hybrids to be the best of both worlds higher cg
and shallower face all combined with a large muscle back feature that hybrid have today.
Hope this helps mike.

I carry a 3-iron instead of a hybrid because the course I play the most is very windy, so I need to play a lot of low shots. I find it easier to control the trajectory with an iron.
That said, a lot of the people I play with use hybrids in the same conditions, and do quite well with them. I think you just have to try different clubs and see what works best for you.

3 iron will be easier to hit the ball out of the rough. With the hybrid, its hard to cut through the grass unless you have a fast powerful swing. Also, you can put more spin on the ball than the hybrid.

The hybrid won't give as much control but will hit longer.

Control. While hybrids are easier to hit and get you out of a lot of tough shots, they're pretty hard to shape your shots, draw and fade, high and low.
