With old dogs, it's a matter of attention and motivation.
If the dog doesn't care about what your teaching him, he won't learn.
If you can motivate him, say with treat tidbits, he can learn.
I had a 7 yo poodle given to me after his owner's death, and there were some things I just could not teach him. He had it in his head that dogs sleep on the bed with the people, pillows included. I never did get it through his head that dogs sleep elsewhere.
However, we were able to teach him to stay, sit, lay down, speak...
Take care,

The same way you teach a young dog. Only it's usually easier, cus the old dog's already figured out the learning thing.

With Luck and alot of treats. Most likely the dog knows how you are from all the years past. You will have to be more assertive in your ways now. It is tricky but can be done with some dogs.

Same as a young dog. Just be mindful if the dog has arthritis or any other issues and go easy. If your older dog wants to learn new things and it's enjoyable to them great. If not then just let the dog enjoy his or her 'retirement' lol

A dog can learn at any age. The key is consistency (but don't over do it, short sessions) and a treat he cannot resist!

The same way you teach a puppy. It can be done, Mythbusters did it on one of their episodes.
