Hey, don't tar us all with the same brush, that's prejudice.
Not all Christians live an unexamined inner life you know, just the ones belonging to the loudly charismatic, evangelical, fundamentalist, agree-with-me-or-else denominations.
REAL Christians don't just follow orders. We decide for ourselves what the moral path is, based on the ethics we have been taught, and our observations of what works. We CHOSE to be Christians after careful consideration, we didn't just agree to it after somebody told us to. Commandments are just the jumping off point - the skeleton of moral decisions that have to be made every day. We do what's right because it's the right thing to do, not because God or Allah, or Buddha or Vishnu or the Holy Earth Mother ordered us to. And we follow Jesus because he was CORRECT as far as we can tell, and pretty darned intelligent about it, not because mom said so. Blind faith is not Christian. Enlightenment is the real ticket.

This is like saying America doesn't have Laws determining the fundamental political principles of a government because they have to follow the Constitution. The point being that the Bible obviously IS a moral code.
As for being unthinking slaves, the first aspect is not true as the Bible appeals to men to think why something is moral, as you see Jesus asking a lot of questions, so that His disciples did what was right not simply because they blindly followed a rule (which obedience does have it's place), but because they saw the validity and wisdom of God and consistency with Scripture in it.
As for being slaves, whether you realize it or not, you are a servant to something at any given time, serving love or lust, truth or error, God for the devil.
As for doubting if atheists have a moral code, they do - whatever seems reasonable to them - the real issue is that they do not have any immutable, transcendent moral authority by which they or we can judge their actions by. Presently, being found in nations that have many good laws which are based principally upon Biblical law, they can make some good moral judgments if they also choose to obey the innate sense of morality the Bible says we have (Rom. 2:14). But there is no assurance that they will continue to do so. Left to themselves, what seems reasonable to them can easily become something that justifies severe repression of their enemies (I've read atheists propose such re. Christians), and even murder. And though atheists will not admit it, it is the atheistic, objectively baseless morality that men like Stalin, Pol Pot and Mao operated out of in murdering their millions. Even false Christianity (R. Catholicism) did not kill as many (though if they had the weapons...) .
In contrast no one can do so in seeking to defend the Christian faith or expand it., as they seek to share the faith of Jesus, who loved us and gave Himself for us, that thru His blood we can have redemption, even the forgiveness of sins by repentance and faith directly to Christ. And which faith, example, love and stability and tempered freedom makes for a better society as well.
If only all Christians would follow it.

Those commandments are there for a reason. When you break them bad things happen. NOTHING good ever comes from sinning and breaking the rules. It comes back and bites you in the rear.
Atheists can have whatever moral code of conduct they want, but they can't live up to it without creating excuses for breaking it eventually. That's the problem. NOBODY can live up to their OWN moral rules, let alone Gods. We need help because as soon as 1 of those is broken 1 time, you are now hell bound. It only takes 1 time in your entire life to fail and into the lake you go. Enter the savior and redeemer because we are stupid and can't stop ourselves from out own stupidity. God knows it, we know it, it's impossible for us to not break the rules unless we die right after we are born. We need help, and He gave it to us, a way to escape the very prison we built up around ourselves without knowing it. Accept the offer and be made free.

Yes, I am a slave of the Lord, but at the same time, you are a slave of sin. The moral code we have was given to us by our Father, you can come up with nothing original, it is all covered in what God has given us.

When Jesus is the Lord of your life, obedience is a sign of love.
I am absolutely a slave to a loving God! I, like Paul, am a bondservant, i.e. a voluntary slave. But rather than being treated harshley, I am given eternal life, peace, and hope.
I am no longer in bondage to sin and ultimately death.

Atheists miss the point..its not about who is more moral. Being moral for a Christian is about honoring God for the gift of salvation. Its the nearest form of sacrifice we can give as human beings to a God who sent His son to die for our sins.
SO therein lies the reason for Christians morality. What puzzles me is what motivates atheists to be moral...besides orders...like the orders of your state or your city. An atheist is as much a slave to orders..man's orders...the fruit of which is NOT salvation..because its not being good that gets you INTO heaven.

In the garden of Eden, there was a tree called the tree of knowledge or the tree of good and evil.
Why did God put this tree in the garden?
He loves us so much, he wanted us to have the choice to follow him not because we have to, but because we want to.
If the tree had not been there and man did not have choice, then man could have been looked upon as slaves. Yet, God does not want slaves, he want children. So we are given a choice to follow God because we love him or to do our own will.
God does not want slaves, he wants children to take care of. He wants us to love him as he loves us.
Is that so much to ask for?

Its called authoritarian ethics.
And it is hypocritical of them to claim atheists have no ethics. I answered a question the other day in which it was stated, basically, that its OK for an atheist to kill people then themselves, because they have no fear of punishment in an afterlife. Of course, this is not even an ethical system, its nothing but fear of reprisal and hope for praise.
Authoritarian ethics are those in which the right or wrong of a thing is determined by what some authority says about it. Fearing Hell is the same as children fearing punishment; there are no ethics involved.

Christian don't follow a moral code. Christianity isn't about being on a point system with God. It's about having a personal relationship with Him and allowing Him to be the Lord of your life.

Quite so, hence the New Testament authors, particularly Paul and I believe Peter, both referred to themselves as slaves to God's law and called for others to be the same.
