My friend has one, Very nice truck. Comfortable ride, decent on gas and plenty of pep. However, the small bed comes into play when he needs to haul something. He does have a towing package and it pull most items fine. He pulls dune buggies with it. Plenty of room for his family when going on trips. He has replaced the ball joints, and u-joints awhile back.
This is a Ford issues, I have a F-150 about the same year and had mine done as well. Overall, he like his Sport Trac. Yet, I am sure you will find people who do not. Everyone has their opinion.

I have a 2003 Sport Trac that I bought new. I've only minor issues with it (windshield sprayer not working, one small recall after I first bought it) so overall I would recommend it. I have the 4x2 with all the options except for 6-CD and moonroof.
But know what you're getting into, it only gets about 15 miles to the gallon, doesn't turn on a dime and the bed is obviously a little small. When I bought mine I didn't care if it had the running boards, but now I realize they are an absolute must as I always climb on them when washing the truck and when other people get in and out of the cab they will want them.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!

I Have an 03 Sport Trac XLT. Its great. Smooth ride like a car yet drives like a truck. I had a ranger before I got my Sport Trac also. It was too small and I wanted more room for passengers. Well now I have it. Loads of room in the back so people can sit comfortably. Bed is all Heavy Duty Plastic so no paint scratches to worry about or bed liners to buy. Bed size is a little small but drop the tailgate and flip out the rack and you can make it as long as a small ranger bed. Decent gas mileage for a truck and plenty of power for a 4.0 liter V6. You can't go wrong.

RESALE VALUE SUCKS transfercase 4x4 problems cost big $$ very weak front suspension and front drive axles also $$$ to reapir all this adds up over time FORD good stop go driving vehicle
TOYOTA 4Runner : Great resale trade after 100.000 miles and 90% more reliable on or off road %105 better warranty over all
harder to find for a lower price in the same year but worth the purchase for a few dollars more.

Pros
Roomy cabin, strong optional V8, hidden storage compartments, nice ride and handling balance.
Cons
V8 is truly gas thirsty- Might as well get an F-250, styling not for everyone, tiny cargo bed compared to small pickup trucks-now that's bad.
Try a Honda Ridgeline:

Or If you're going small, try a Toyota Tacoma

May your choice be the best

Therangerstation.com is a good site for info and message boards on Explorer/Bronco problems and Consumer Reports annual buying guide is another good source for repair histories and safety as well.
