I need to write 2 letters of recommendation for two seperate people that walked out on a job because they were a) fed up with what was going on there b) sick of the way they were being treated c) so many other things. The letter(s) I'm writing are more like character recommendation letters, but I've never written a letter of recommendation before, but they can't get letters from their previous employer because all the previous employer would do is talk smack about them even though all they ever did for their employer was 150% beyond what was needed. Any advice?

Be very careful about what you say. Anything you write that might stop them from getting a job can get you sued. Their previous employer cannot say anything detrimental about them but they can infer and answer question in a way that shows they were not good employees. If you are doing this as a friend, why not just ask to be a reference and that would allow them to call you. For the letter, just focus on their good points and what would make them a good employee. Points-punctual, able to self start, able to work in groups, pleasant personality, computer literate, neat and good dresser, well-educated, well read, etc etc. If you can relate anything like that to volunteer work or anything they have done for the community. Just show their best side and how it would work for their perspective employer.

Write their good qualities and good they did on the job. that's a character reference, emphasis what a pleasure it was to work with them. put it on your own personal letterhead. if you don't have one, just use your name and address.
