No you cannot quit. You entered into a contract. You may be able to transfer but it depends on how bad the NG needs your MOS-- when I was Texas NG I couldnt transfer to Active Duty Army because they spent money training me and they wanted to benefit from that and they severely needed my job skill. So once I finished my contract with them I went AD Army (kept my rank) and have soldiered on ever since.
**Although occassionally if you complete an overseas tour, toward the end they will give you the option to submit an RC/AC (Reserve Component to Active Component) packet.
You will just need to inquire with your chain of command- cause it takes them to sign off on your packet.

When you're at basic and ait you can ask to speak to a National Guard liaison towards the end of training. They will tell you that you have to stay with your branch aka National Guard for 6 months after graduation from ait until you can put in a request to switch branches. This is because of the funds the National Guard used to send you to training. You kind of 'owe' that 6 months to your branch. Then you're free to request to switch branches. Note that your request may not always be granted.

Air Force and Navy despises previous Army enlistments even ARNG. It's a tough break even after you finish out your enlistment contract to switch other than Marines. Which most Marines are unhappy with the way things progress as far as moving up in rank... of course this is what I hear personally, not to speak for all Marines. You can drop a packet fairly soon after basic and try to switch. You can switch units if you have a good reason and know someone to pull the proper strings.

No you can't switch to a different branch of the military after you have completed basic and AIT, you signed a contract for the army, so you are obligated to finish it. As for switching to different units, you would have to talk to your chain of command to see what your options were.

No, remember all that paperwork you signed at the MEPS station, that my friend is called a contract! The only way out of the national guard is to go active.

not without approval from your NG CO. and chances are.. he won't grant it, since you just got trained on their dime.
Typically, you must be in the job for 2 years before you can request to transfer out or switch jobs.

you have to complete your contract.
you committed yourself to your country.
so, did I, so, therefore I'm not going to go AWOL or become a deserter.
