Instead of filling up jail cells with criminals that are sentenced for a long time, I think it would make sense to give them an option of freedom as long they assist the military in war. For example, why send in troops that work hard, have families and actually want something out of life. They could use criminals for setting up equipment, looking for land mines, etc. If they escape, they are not going to make it very far in Iraq. I think this is a good idea and would probably save tons of money and give criminals an option to do something else instead of rotting away in a cell. What do you think , I would like to hear pros and cons.

This is a bizarre idea that seems to keep coming up... it's a horrible idea. The military is a highly-trained, disciplined force, regardless of how hard the press is trying to tarnish that image with the one or two deviants who cause trouble. Putting criminals in a position where they can wantonly kill, or escape, makes no more sense than giving them a weapon and asking them to patrol the streets with police officers. In any case, terrorist groups have been known to accept American defectors; I can guarantee you that more than a few of those criminals would try it. Having them there would endanger the missions that real soldiers go on every day and is an unacceptable risk. American civilians neither seem to know nor care how important all the work we're doing over there is, and do not seem to be content to leave the military alone to do its job. The insane amount of interference from these same civilians back home, not surprisingly, is a large reason we're having so much trouble making progress there.

No. It takes professionalism, courage, dedication and many other attributes to do what we do. If you watch the news you see what happens when someone of lesser morales makes it in- questionable acts and crimes that are committed by U.S. soldiers- or those criminals pretending to be soldiers.

And for the guy who posted that all those who voted for President Bush should go- Alot of us are. Not all of America is as feeble minded as the few, the minority who have nothing better to do than trash talk about a military action in which most have not taken part in.

And irregardless of how we got into this war- which I wont comment on as NOONE knows all the facts involved and can only theorize as to what was really the case- we removed a dictator who was a threat to the United States and the "Free world's" status quo which in turn protected our way of life. No longer can that one dictator wake up and decide to attack us or in any way support those that would. Since we have done so we also took the responsibility of restoring order in that area and hopefully in a democratic government which many of those people long for.

The armed forces work best when it is a strictly volunteer force.

Professional soldiers have better things to do than to baby sit a punk criminal malcontent.

Although, there are plenty of instances where a judge has given a petty criminal the option of serving either in the jail or the forces. This goes farther to rehabilitate a borderline offender than mere jail time ever would.

But simply giving murderers a chance to carry a gun for a living and kill more innocent people in another country is an ill advised move.

Now illegal immigrants on the other hand....

If an illegal immigrant learned the language and was willing to bleed for his new country by serving a term or two in the forces would automatically qualify for citizenship in my opinion.

The most interesting story about criminals in the military came about in Russia during WW2 , the Russian President had them fight and promised them release after the war . The good thing is alot of historians believe if the Russian President didn't have prisoners fight , Russia would have lost the war . The bad thing is , after the war the President sent them all back to jail .

As for American prisoners in Iraq , the problem is - How do you keep them in line ? Well again we would have to look to Russia , who kept there prisoners in line by killing anyone who didn't follow an order . Anyway prisoners in war is great in theory but I don't believe it will happen in the US anytime soon .

Honor. Courage. Commitment.

Those aren't things prisoners typically have.

No. I would not want someone who's only option to prison is carrying a loaded weapon.. and following orders... and being responsible for MY son's wellbeing. If he can't follow the rules of society, he can't handle the pressure and other things necessary to be trustworthy in battle.

John R quit whining about Bush It just makes you look like a stupid Liberal. As far as the question goes. Hell yes that's a great Idea but Liberals Like John R would cry because Liberals worry more about criminal civil liberties then they do for honest people

We already have plenty of criminals over in Iraq--Halliburton, KBR, etc. $400 billion and counting for this debacle? Makes me sick... Not to mention the lives of Americans that have been sacrificed to fight this wrong war at the wrong time.

Depending on what they are in jail for, I think they should be given a choice. My nephew is going to jail for unpaid fines and unpaid child support. Not a bad kid. They could either take the fine money out of his pay or forgive his fines for joining. Going to Iraq, he would get tax free pay and they could take his child support out of his pay. Past and present. He did try to join, but his fines and back child support stopped him.

No murders, drug dealers and people like that. Our jails are filled with people that are not dangerous, just misguided.

They do not have to be ordered to join, just given a choice. In the end, it would be their choice. The military may just get a few more good recruits this way.

well it would not really help the military over there for the fact if someone is in jail for a violent crime they might have a problem with authority and to fight a war you need structure and discipline............whats also to keep them from comiting more crimes over there when you hand them a weapon..............yea it might save here but it can cost america's reputation over there............it can also it up providing a way to commit suicide for some individuals because they won't end up doing there sentence and instead die

Yeah they could get all in one big pile the Iran and the prisoners and fight it out. Their all just about alike. But wait until Bush , Cheney, Rumsfield , Condi just the whole caboodle and then send all of them into Iraq but bring our troops home and let them take their place, get Laurie Bell and Lynn also.
