"Chopper" is just a slang word for a helicopter, also known among oil-rig workers as a paraffin pigeon. The aircraft is always known among the aviation community as a helicopter, never chopper.

The two words, chopper and helicopter, might mean the same thing but, as mentioned by the pros in this thread, the term Chopper makes helicopter pilots, and other pros affiliated literally cringe when they hear the slang termt.
I'm an old fixed wing aviator and have nothing to do with helicopter but the term chopper even makes me cringe.
People really make fools out of themselves trying to sound cool using the term, especially news people on the 6;00 news. It is not a cool word to use for those here that use it. Unless you want to sound foolish and insulting.
Calling an ambulance a meat wagon might sound cool to some but,,,,,,,,,

Chopper is also slang for a modified Harley. The Discovery Channel runs a series called "American Chopper", on this subject. Not related to helicopters. I only mention it because it is easy to make an error in what is being discussed, until the context becomes clear. BTW, Huey's still make the same chopping noise, even if they are not in 'Nam any more. One flew over my farm a couple of months ago. You hear it coming for a long time before you see it. Whump whump whump....Pretty distinctive. There are not many around anymore.

Chopper is a horrible nickname for a helicopter. Most aviation professionals cringe when that term is used. (at least I do). Helicopter are also known as rotary wing aircraft. (because the wings (or blades of the helicopter) spin)).

"Chopper" is slang for helicopter. In a crisis, chopper is quicker to say than helicopter. Casper- gee, I guess all of my friends and I must have been posers when we were in Viet Nam.

Both words refer to a helicopter.
The difference is that if you call a helicopter a "helicopter," then helicopter pilots and mechanics WON'T punch you the way they would if you were to call it a "chopper."
(To tell the truth, only the hardcore guys/girls punch; the rest just walk away from you, laughing derisively.)
