it means the number of lines displayed on the TV. When a TV station sends a signal, for lack of better term, it sends in lines. 1080 means the number of lines your HD TV will display. More lines more clearer or sharper. You will see a letter after the numbers either i or p. i stands for interlace and p stands for progressive. interlace means the horizontal lines will display first and vertical lines display next. p means the horizontal and vertical lines display at the same time. It is better to have progressive thus more expensive than interlace. Don't worry, you won't see how the lines are displayed or shown. It is very very fast.

1080p means that 1080 lines of video data are displayed in progressive mode. Progressive is the same as non-interlaced. All 1080 horizontal scan lines are displayed in a single vertical scan (1/60 second). In interlaced mode, the odd-numbered lines (1,3,5) are displayed in one "field" (1/60 sec) and the even-numbered lines (2,4,6) are displayed in the next field. The two fields make up a "frame".

There is no such thing as vertical scan lines in US television, as suggested by one answerer.
