When I am steaming rice I don't add oil, or anything but sea salt or stock. oils prevent the rice from absorbing liquid and just makes it take longer to cook. Add oils or butter at the end if you add it at all

Making rice is not as hard as it seems for best results I stay away from the instant rice and use long grain raw rice depending on what the rice is used for to make rice as a side dish add one cup of long grain rice to a sauce pan and add 2 cups of water the rule for raw rice is double the water for the amount of rice and you will so if you just want a half cup raw rice then add 1 cup water to it and l never go wrong add 1/2 teaspoon of salt and turn heat on high till it starts to boil then put lid on and reduce heat to simmer and cook ten minutes or all water is absorbed and rice is tender if you want sushi style white rice then put rice in a pan and you scrub the rice in your fingers till the rice water is really milky drain and repeat a few times and your rice will have a sticky texture

no, you don't use oil to cook rice. Just put 1 part rice, 2 parts water in a pan and boil, cover and lower to simmer for 15 mins.(don't take the cover off, it will be fine.) A couple of things you can do is saute the rice to golden brown in butter or oil before cooking it to make a different texture and flavor, or fry it in some oil after cooking it. i think that's how they make fried rice. You can also cook the rice in broth or juice to flavor it.

I always put just a pat of butter into the water before I add the rice. I'm not sure why, but that's what both my grandma AND my husbands grandma did. If it's good enough for them.....

If it's instant white rice, I use margarine. If it's basmati rice I saute it in olive oil with garlic before adding the broth.

I just use water. David will drop in a chicken bouillon cube when the rice is served w/chicken. Margaring sounds like a good idea, I might try that one.
