The Pope is Pope Benedict the XVI. He is the leader of the Catholic Church. He is St. Peter's successor. He is in much the same authoritative place as was Moses or Joshua or any of the other leaders in the Jewish religion. He is the Vicar of Christ. Jesus said to Peter "Thou art Peter (rock), and upon this rock, I shall build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail over her" One of the ways he insures this is by supplying infallibility to the Pope in his teaching authority. He can still personally sin just like every one else but, when he is speaking for the Church in matters of Dogma, he is speaking with the voice of Jesus himself. Jesus also told him (St. Peter) "What you bind on earth, shall be bound in Heaven, and what you loose on Earth shall be loosened in Heaven"

His name is Pope Benedict XVI. He's the head of the catholic church. Catholics believe that God speaks through him. I liked Pope John Paul II better, but that's probably because he was more youth oriented, while Pope Benedict is more conventional.

In a sentence, he actually is,
A sinner whose position is based upon the premise of a perpetuated Petrine papacy, but which is not warranted by Scripture, and in reality finds it's foundation in the Roman Empire, resulting in an unBiblical, autocratic Cesario papacy, and perverse promulgations and perfunctory practices, the effect of which has been to produce past generations and a present populace of people that are Biblically ignorant, trusting principally in the supposed powers of Rome and their own merit to save them, and who typically are apathetic or antagonistic toward the preaching of the Biblical gospel of grace, which saves those who humble themselves as unworthy sinners, utterly unable to gain Heaven not escape Hell, but who thus repent directly to God, and trust directly in th Lord Jesus to save them. To God be the glory!

the site shows from scripture why there is a pope, others have already covered the current popes name and main role as christs earthly representative. god bless.
ignore peacebyjesus......, the pope as a man is a sinner but it is comforting to know that even the pope goes to confessions, in matters of faith he is infallible.
