Are you serious ? Well I guess if your family would not treat a black cat well because of it's color I would wait for one of a different color.

Black cats are no more "evil" then the typical tabby!
This is nonsense. I have had many black cats, and they have been the sweetest most loving cats I've had. By the way, rarely are black cats really ever truly black...Most of the time, in the sun light, you'll see they have a brownish red cast to their fur, although some can be a deep black.
If you plan to adopt a black cat...Do it quickly, as many shelters and rescues will suspend the adoptions of black cats during the fall, because of wackos and the novelty of having a black cat for Halloween.
When choosing a pet, look for personality.....don't base you choice on "superstitions".
Good luck to you.

I am going to give you the same answer that everyone else gave you. Black cats are not bad luck!!! That is so silly! I have a one who's name is Blackie. She had a litter of kittens, in which two are black, Cinder and Raven. Momma Blackie is the sweetest, most clever cat, out of the 8 cats, I have. The gene passed down to her two black daughters as well. They are indoor/outdoor cats too, so when they go out at night I know they will be safe because of their color. You won't have to worry about your black clothes showing all that cat hair either! Don't turn away the kitty because of what your folks say, you will be missing out.

well, you have to live with your family. Try bringing them to the vets office to look at the kitty. You might change there minds by the cats inherent cuteness :) but if adopting a black cat means that the cat won't be treated well, then don't do it. Its not worth an unhappy cat just to get a cat.

Black cats are in no way evil or bad luck. People stopped burning older single women and black cats at the stake for witchcraft over 300 years ago. Let it go. If your family is that superstitious though, you should wait for different colors to be available because you may subconsciously mistreat the poor creature.

Superstition won't affect a dark colored animal, but if your family is so stuck in the dark ages, they won't be treating the kitten with love and care that it deserves.
For that reason alone I'd wait and pick another color one.

Oh brother, are you serious?? That is so sad. I would say don't get the kitty since it sounds like your family would just treat it poorly anyway. Is your family racist by chance?? Just curious how hair color, skin color, coat color or any other things beings have NO control over being born with affect how they treat them. This makes me very sad, obviously you dont think this way, so I give you lots of credit for rising above the silliness of your family members.

If you look investigate this further, such as in a book about cats and bad luck, and witches etc. You will find that in actuality it is a Grey cat that is bad luck, if you even believe any of it. I have a black cat, and 4 that are varied colors, they are all different but I don't think the black one is bad luck. Her name is Hoochie Mama.

Black cats are not bad luck. If they were, something would have fallen on my head by now!! I have two eight-year-old black cats and they are very loving, and warmer than most cats, because their black fur absorbs sunlight, which they love to lie in.
Why is your family interfering with you and getting a cat? You should just get the cat you fall in love with, and don't bother waiting; they really grow on you, and one of them will stand out to you. I am sure of it

Black cats are in no way bad luck. I have two of them and they are wonderful and so is my luck. One I have had for 13 years. Your family sounds like they are living in the dark ages but if they are unwilling to love and accept a black cat then you better wait. The cat will be miserable if no one is unafraid to be around it.
