toddlers toddle!! If you look up toddle in the dictionary, it means to walk in a way that kids who just learned to walk do. So a toddler is someone who has recently learned to walk -- most people think of toddlers as 1 - 2 yr olds. Maybe a little older -- from just walking age until a little under 3 yrs old.

There are two schools of thought on the subject. Many people consider a child a toddler when they are one year old or thereabouts. Others consider a child a toddler when they are beginning the walking stage (and toddling around like penguins) and feeding themselves regular food. Since these criteria tend to happen at about the same time, people don't often get into arguments about whether a child is a baby or a toddler.

Legally here in Wisconsin (as pertaining to child care regulations) any child over the age of one and under the age of three is considered a toddler. Those of us who work with infants and toddlers are required to get special certification. There are also differences in the regulations for facilities providing care for infants and toddlers under the age of two.

I worked at a daycare and by state legal standards infants are 0-15 months. Toddlers are 15 months to 2 years 9 months. 2 years nine months through age 5 are preschoolers. So at 15 months babies become toddlers. It has nothing to do with walking.

I always think baby until they're a year old, then toddler is 1-2, then they turn 3 and I consider the preschool aged. That's my take on the timeline! : )

I define toddlers as when they walk almost exclusively as opposed to crawling. They go toddle toddle toddle. So cute!!!
