Well, 80 years ago, people would say Bobby Jones. Then came Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and now Tiger.
Tiger will someday be remembered as the greates golfer America has ever produced. Maybe the best golfer the world has seen.
That being said... Right now, Jack is the best.

Some may say Jack Nicklaus but what about Bobby Jones? He played in an era with poor equipment and fewer tournaments while working a semi-full-time job. I'm a big Jack fan but I think before we just hand Jack a title we should look at some of the others. I give Arnold Palmer credit for bringing golf to the masses but as a pure player and lover of the game Bobby had to be right up there.

Tiger Woods because he has it all. Every skill you need he has it. Most people watch him. He made golf popular. He made Nike popular. If there was no Tiger there would be a very short audience for golf. When Tiger Woods is up he changes the way the game is played. However Jack Nicloson is up there to. If Jack was born the same time as Tiger he could possibly be better because of the Techonogly. Imagine that Jack useing Weighted Drives lol. Tiger and Jack are tied in my opionion.

As of right now i would say Nicolas or Bobby Jones. Nicolas won 18 majors. Bobby Jones won 13 in 7 years and he retired at age 30. He could have won a few more.Tiger may very well be the greatest once his playing days are over but i think he needs to play at his high level for 5 to 10 more years before we crown him king.

As of this date it has to be Jack Nicklaus. He has won the most majors than any golfer.

When you say WAS.... yes, Jack Nicklaus. But I think most knowledgable golf affectionados believe Tiger Woods is young enough, strong enough, and good enough that he will be considered the best when his career ultimately ends. You might find the following sites interesting:

Golf is different than baseball. In golf you can argue for hours over who is the greatest player. In baseball, you can argue for hours over who is the SECOND greatest player. There is no argument about who the best baseball player was.
