Is there anywhere in the UK where you can buy whistles that you can use in an emergency e.g. if you go out at night and you're assaulted? My colleagues from my workplace are going on a Christmas night out and I'd like to buy one of these whistles.

I'm sure that you can, the easiest place might be a sporting goods store. The whistles like the coaches have.
I don't know about the UK but there is also mace, and tasers available. Tear gas pens and a lot of other safety devices that are non-lethal. Don't forget about a flashlight either, that may help you avoid a nasty situation by crossing the road. good luck.

Try an outdoor shop, such as Blacks, Millets, etc. They sell mountain rescue distress whistles. Also yacht chandlers if you're by the coast - they have similar whistles on life-jackets. Somewhere I've got a metal police whistle, but I can't remember where I bought it.
Also, why not pick-up a second-hand mobile - don't need a SIM, as it should dial emergency 112 or 999 from switch-on screen.

get a gun and a carry permit, and learn to use it.or just dial 911 after its over, they might show up, and of curse you just can stay home and brick up all the walls and windows...
