you're just about to get up from a chair and the cats come running to park on your lap and start purring? What kind of radar is that?

It's called "Feline expectapetting syndrome". They are one step ahead of us in the space-time continum. It's similar to the "Don'tsquishapuddy syndrome" where you can be walking and a cat will throw itself under your raised foot as its coming down for a step. This stealth manuver by my cat throws me into an instant "chicken dance" as to avoid stepping on said cat(s). They have much more time to plan these attacks then we have time to think of ways to defend ourselves.

It's the "keep him in his place, he's just furniture" sonar. You exist to serve them so, naturally, the best time for lap sitting is when you are about to stand up or if you need to get up to answer the phone or need to go to the bathroom. What? You think you have free will with cats around???

I'm not too sure what kinda cat you got, but the answer is simple. Cats are attracted to body odor. When you sit down you start to sweat from your bottom end. When you stand up the odor is released into the air. The cat smells this and is attracted to your lap.
