go to babel fish online translation sites (they have free versions, not 100% accurate, but if your letter is too personal, that will get you a good start).

Otherwise, it depends on the version of French. Like other older languagues, there is regional specific language or slang used that some native speakers don't know if they are not from the region. Ex. some french canadians can't always understand european french speakers, etc.

Best bet, if you don't care who reads it, post it here, and someone will tell you. If you do care who reads it, try the following translation sites, they are the best free babel fish one's I've found that give you a good idea of what's in your letter.
