The defeat of Athens' Sicilain expenditon during the Peloponesian War (431BC-404BC) heraled her "twilight of the Gods'". Not only Athens lost most of her crack troops, but also lots of influence and in the long trm was more or less doomed to lose the Peloponesian War along with her sphere of influence. her democrating governemnt and her very freedom (temporarily) at the hands of a vengeful Sparta...It's a similar fate hoovering above US' head if they prove unable to conclude successfuly their Iraq campaingn (which obviously has not finished yet!)?(Personaly I do not wish any ill to US!)

If you want to compare Sicily's involvement in the Peloponesian War to an American conflict you would be better served to look at Vietnam or Korea. Basically 2 large powerful forces doing their fighting in part of the world that doesn't really matter to them. All symbolic victories with no real gain.

There is nothing to compare.

Your comparision / fantasy can not be made to fit the current world scenario with regards Iraq and the USA.
