Your stats come from the recent Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies.
According to the survey the US (90 small arms for every 100 people) is the most heavily armed country followed by Yemen (61 for every 100).
For me, I think this is great news. Maybe some terrorists or criminals will think twice before causing problems here.
Also, of importance from that survey is the fact that there is absolutely no correlation bewteen the amount of small arms and gun violence. Latin America has a huge gun-related crime problem and yet had some of the lowest small arms figures, Brazil has 9 for every 100.
In fact, the survey noted that gun-related crime is linked to rapid urban growth, poverty, and ineffective security..what! you mean it's not just because people have guns! I love it when the truth comes out.
To quote the article:
On a per-capita basis, Yemen had the second most heavily armed citizenry behind the United States, with 61 guns per 100 people, followed by Finland with 56, Switzerland with 46, Iraq with 39 and Serbia with 38. France, Canada, Sweden, Austria and Germany were next, each with about 30 guns per 100 people, while many poorer countries often associated with violence ranked much lower. Nigeria, for instance, had just one gun per 100 people.

Hmmm, I beleve actually it would be Switerland. Every male in the nation has a weapon as per Swiss law. So based on that, the density of guns per 100 people would be that high. As for the other figures? Those sound awful suspect. 875 Million Firearms? That is really a guess at best. 8 million new arms per year? With no big manpower wars ongoing outside the Mid east, who's buying that many arms??? There is already a glut of surplus East bloc weapons in the 3rd world & on store shelves here. So I really question such numbers. The Market is not that heavy. They don't even make 8 million TV's a year. And you can buy tv's far easier than a Gun.

I think those numbers are considerably off, I own nearly 875 million firearms just myself. Seriously, some of us Americans like guns while others do not. I like guns, I don't mind the others that choose not to own guns as long as they don't demand I give mine up.
Here in my rural community, there are probably 3-4 guns for every person in the city. In the bigger cities where the anti-gunners thrive; there are significantly less guns. If I had to ball park a guess, I would say for the national average there are probably more like 40-50 guns to 100 people. By the way, since 1968 all guns in the US need to be registered, its just a matter if they are registered to their present owner. Some states allow private resale of guns without registration, but most people choose to register anyways so that if the gun is stolen, it amy be returned. I highly doubt your 12% are registered, I would say more like 80% are registered. All mine are, you should see the funny loook I got when I DEMANDED to register my muzzleloader. Do Americans own 4.5 million of 8 million annually produced guns? -No, most of these would be military produced guns with no intent of ever reaching the consumer market. So we couldn't buy them.
Lastly America doesn't own nearly 25% of the worlds guns. I would bet between Russia and all the third world countries that should count for most of them.

I think around 25% of Americans own a gun. I read it is about 75 million people. I'm trying to do that math with all these numbers, and it seems to me that if there are 90 guns for every hundred people, on average a person would have to own 3.6 guns. That sounds reasonable to me. So although there are a lot of guns, 75% of society is still not armed. But if something were to go down where we needed a citizen militia, the 25% could still supply the rest with enough guns.

1st the "statistics" don't tell the whole story.
I believe I need to bump my numbers up a few. I have enough for my family to stave off a few scumbag political gun grabbers.
Remember Ruby Ridge.. You may say that doesn't count, but in fact it does. The FBI entrapped a man and infringed on someones 4th amendment to make a point. This should never again happen in this country.
More firearms is better, I believe we need work at getting that ratio up to 100+%.
in my gun cabinet I do have several firearmms. Each with a different and distinct purpose.
I don't believe firearms should be registered. I don't want my name on a list for commie thugs in the UN to come after me with.
It is great news the number of firearms in the US that is held in legal channels is high. that means when these bozos try to come and get them, someone will likely shoot back. That scares them.
Hunting and shooting sports is on the rise in the US thankfully do to real education not gooberment and liberal indoctrination strategies.
If you think government can provide security, food, shelter etc, from cradle to grave one only need look to 2005 NOLA a state and city infested with crime and strict gun control policies. When chaos comes I will be armed and to the teeth..

I thought Canada had a higer rate of gun ownership.
Personally I have 17 assorted rifles and pistols as well as one slingshot for launching antennas and a crossbow that never does anything except stand in the corner as a curiosity. I don't have a single action revolver or a good hunting rifle, but I think I'll address that in the next year. I have four times as many AR-15s as the average US soldier too.
I expect places like Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have higher rates of gun ownership. I think the people who own guns tend to have more than one, so even if there are 90 guns for 100 people I doubt one in four actually have them.
If 90% of people actually do own guns then don't you think gun control is political suicide? Even in the Democratik People's Republik of Kalifornia I only know three people who strongly disapprove of guns and one of them is a foreigner. Even the most lefty tree hugging liberal I know enjoys shooting up cans and old (freon free) fridges when he isn't protesting against Bush's war of political expediency.

Did you know that in WW 2 documents were found in one of the Hitler’s offices, an invasion plans for the United States.
It had been rejected 100% by the Germans, the reasoning for rejection too many civilians with guns.
One of the major fears was that the invading force would have the U.S Military force on one side and the armed civilians on the other, and no place to retreat.
Now in all truth, can you blame them for not wonting to play over here.
That’s why Japan and the Terrorist use hit and run tactic.
But that don’t seem to work for them either.
90 out of 100, that last 10 must be tree huggers.

Even if those numbers are true, it's not an entirely accurate picture. How many guns to you have? I have enough that if no other house on my street has a gun, the average would still be a little above one per house.
Most, if not 99% of gun owners have more than one. And, like myself, that doesn't mean they only have 2.

9 guns for every 10 people?
That's a depressing statistic.
It's less than 1/3 the number of guns people ought to have.
Every person should have, at a bare minimum, a pistol, a rifle and a shotgun--all in calibers greater than .22--in order to have a well-rounded armory.
When American gun ownership reaches 30 guns for every 10 people, I'll be satisfied.
When worldwide gun ownership reaches 30 guns for every 10 people, there will be a reasonable chance for peace on Earth.
