A police report should have been filed. In fact, it still can. You will also have to notify your insurance agent.
Yeah, I've been hit by hit and run twice. Both times I was lucky enough to have some one get the license plate number and give me their names so that they could be witnesses.
The best one was an old lady in her Lincoln town car. She backed into my VW's door and smashed it in. She stopped and left me a note and put it on the windshield. When I went to get my car and leave, I saw what happened. The lady just scribbled on the paper and left it so people would think that she was leaving her name. A witness told me what happened and he got her license plate number. I called the police and they gave me her name and address. So I got in my car and drove to her house and knocked on the door. When she answered the door, I asked her if she'd hit a VW today, she had a surprised look on her face, and asked me how I had gotten her name. I told her the Louisville police department. I had no problem with her paying for the damage.
Justice does live, sometimes it is hard to find though.

I witnessed a pedestrian hit by a car in January - the man was tossed so high into the air that he spun around & around on the way down. The driver of the car that hit him didn't hit the brakes, never slowed down, didn't stop. They also didn't turn themselves in for months after - even tho their car had sustained massive damage.
If the person who nearly hit your wife was very young, perhaps they were afraid they would get busted by the police. Perhaps they were drunk or stoned. Most likely they were young, inexperience & out for a joy ride. They may even have been in a stolen vehicle.
I'm sorry your wife was unable to report them; it could have done them a great favor & gotten them off the road before someone was killed. I hope she's okay now.

if you want ur insurance to cover the damage you need to call and file a police report immediatly. i was also hit by what seemed to be a drunken driver. which did not slow down even enough time to know he had left me injured. he forced me off the road and the snow bank took my suv into a pole. my car was totalled and my back was severly injured i had inturnal bruising bruises from my seat belts. my insurance company covered the damages and hospital bill which were for my initial er bill 1 week admitted and then 6mo of physical therapy to rebuild my lumbar muscles in my back which were all torn in the accident. your wife made a mistake not filing a report all i could give the cops was that it was a red suv thats all i knew and i still got covered. so do your self a favor and call and file a report your insurance company will not take you seriously if you dont. good luck and i hope your wife is ok.

Man thats a bummer. It sounds like that person was either running from someone or they are just a total asshole. I had someone do that to me although my car was parked and I didn't see it happen. I parallel parked and when I came back to my car about an hour later, there was a long scratch on the side and the side view mirror was taken off with a dent in the bumper. It cost a lot to fix too. Sorry to hear that happened but there a lot of idiots and jerks on the road that drive like that.

Call the police - if they are diligent they will take pictures of your car's damage - and then check with body shops in the area for cars with matching damage.
At the very least you should file it with the police as your insurance company may require it.
You should always call the police.

I had this happen to me. I got enough information to identify the vehicle and the cops eventually caught up to him. The person had no insurance and no license. So they hit and kept going.
The knowledge of knowing they have done wrong and fear of the consequences would possess someone to behave in this manner.

Well my only response to this question and incident is. If you want your car repaired a police report is usually required. Because this damage could of happened by your error and you're just lying to recover. A report verifies your story. This way it will fall under your uninsured motorist clause for payment and recovery.

I'm a paramedic and we see this every day. People are crazy and just don't care about anyone else. Chances are this person had no insurance or was drunk.
