Well, this is actually an interesting question! Here's what I found from Wikipedia first:

It was revealed that Ross and Monica's father was Jewish and their mother was not. That said, Ross is seen attempting to get his son Ben to celebrate Hanukkah, by dressing up as a character he invented named the 'Holiday Armadillo'. On another occasion, Chandler alludes to Ross being Jewish when Ross goes to steal a Bible from a hotel and Chandler says, "Besides it's a New Testament! What are you gonna do with it?."

So this gives you some additional information:

1) Ross was a Reform Jew. Unless your mother is Jewish, you are not recognized as Jewish by traditional Jewish halachah (Jewish law). However, *either* parent's being Jewish is enough in the Reform movement.

2) Ross converted. In case #1 above, it is also possible that Ross converted. In this case he could belong to any branch of Judaism--you wouldn't be able to tell which one.
