Agree. Patriotism has become like a religion since 9/11. I get so sick of the emails about Patriotism and if you don't agree then you are un-American.

I don't think it's simple. But Patriotism for some people is definitely a form of idolatry.
Especially the ones who are into flag worship.
They would literally kill someone over a flag but if asked what it was a symbol of, they could not give a decent answer.

Patriotism is a healthy love and appreciation of country.
But if patriotism becomes nationalism and you are not allowed to practice your faith or voice your opinion if it is different from the nationalistic philosophy then I can see how it can be considered an alternate religion.
It is scary when you are accused of being un-American because you are not Christian or support Bush and the war in Iraq. This kind of mob mentality can easily become nationalism.

Patriotism is the love of country, idolatry is the worship of something other than God. Big difference.

Sort of. It's good to be patriotic, but alot of the patriotism you see is naive exclusionism. People claim to love America, but they want 50% of it's members to leave the country at the same time.

I agree, there isn't any patriotism in this country anymore. People have gotten meaner and crueler over the years. Even the flag doesn't mean anything anymore. Heck, it isn't even respected like it used to be.
I know I will get lots of thumbs down for this answer too. Let it be.

Depends if you are talking about simply supporting and defending your country or worshiping it. Some people worship their country. That is a form of idolatry. Same goes for Jesus.

Disagree. Patriots do not worship objects, and they certainly do not believe that deities reside within objects. They tend to respect certain objects such as the flag, but the flag isn't even the ultimate target of their devotion, which is the state.

The flashy, flag waving, my country is the best, we can do no wrong patriotism? Absolutley.
Being proud of your country but realizing that we still have a LONG way to go? No.

It Can be...I love my country and would not want to move from here, but I find it as idolatry to put the symbols of this country above God and many do just that.

Almost anything carried to ridiculous extremes can become idolatrous. But patriotism in its proper place and proper degree is a virtue.
