I assume you mean "defender"...if you don't want one, stop committing crimes or pay for your own lawyer, idiot.

They may work for the government, but their job is to defend indigent clients. The public defender in my jurisdiction is one of the best criminal lawyers in the county. That being said, there is a big difference in a hired attorney and a public defender. The private attorney will promise you he can beat the charge. The public defender will give you an honest assessment of your chances
Your mileage may vary.

No, I don't trust most of the defendants. The defenders, on the other hand, yes - somewhat. They are working hard (sometimes) to get out of their crummy paying job and into a private practice.

I work with them nearly every day. They are mostly hard working, over-worked, underpaid, and trying to handle too much too soon under some of the worst conditions around. They defend those with no money -- and usually no conscience or desire to abide by the laws of the society. It is a shame, because they are mostly trying to do their best in a thankless job.

Many of them are very young granted in many cases hard working, but still very young. Basically they are rookies who in some cases can be very good but in many cases may not have the court savvy that the experienced prosecutor would have.
