i see it a lot. they be going, and then you see a little fire ball shoot out, why's that?

When the drivers let off the gas pedal, some fuel escapes into the exhaust system and catches fire because the exhaust is so hot. When they push back down on the gas pedal, the fire it blown out by the air moving through the exhaust pipe.

The fire ball is extra fuel left in the tail pipe.

Since the change to unleaded fuel this is un burnt fuel that ignites and burns.It does scorch the side of the car and may have contributed to the insulation that would burn early in the C O T car races.

That's just excess fuel burning off. If you pay attention, the flashes always come at the same time and that's because it happens when the drivers take their foot off the gas pedal and are going into the corner.
