I'm pretty sure with will unpet some but I have to ask (I'm tired of people looking down on me and my family for owning mutts).
How many people realize that all the "pure bred" dogs were once mutts. The only pure breed k-9 os a wolf. People bred them to others with likable traits until they got something else and then mixed these to get something else and so forth and so on.
So why are "mutts" looked down on?
I have nothing against any breed or mix of breeds, and I've owned both pure and mixed breeds. This is just something that has been on my mind for a while and I wanted to see what others thought.

I stand corrected on the wolf. The point, I guess I was trying to make is that most of the purebred dogs around to day were at one time mutts too.
I agree about charging hundreds and thousands of dollars for a dog (any dog though). I do think that people who breed, whether purebred or mutt should to a thorough check on who gets the puppies. If more people did this there would be less miss treated animals.

I currently own 9 mutts and 1 purebred. My mom has 4 mutts right now and last summer lost her 14 yr old collie. To me if they are raised right and love they are great no matter what their parents are. Most of my dogs are rescue. And I'm not going to lie, I have bred mutts. My boarder collie because I was tired of people asking when I was going to breed her. All her puppies went to great homes. I also bred my APBT because I wanted a puppy (she had been stolen when she was a puppy and because she wouldn't fight I got her back)

They people who stole her fed her gun powder. I don't know how long before the side effects from that will take affect. They are all fixed now and I have no plans to breed any more.

All of mine have some sort of job. The boarder collie's puppies are either stock dogs or went to homes that had children and the child's parent wanted to know the parents before commiting to a dog for their kids (they had a very bad experience with a shelter animal and the child would not go near a dog from the shelter after). The ABPT puppies are all going to loving homes and are going to be used as either pet/hunting dogs or pet/stock dogs. The people getting them all came to me before I bred her and were screened just as thorough as if they were asking if my son could stay the night. None have ever fought, let a dog run loose, beat, or in any other way harmed a dog. They all live close to me and have been told if for any reason they have to get rid of the puppies to bring them back to me so that I can find another home. I now get weekly calls from everyone telling me what the puppies are doing and how big they are. I've even gotten pictures. These puppies are in homes that..

love them and treat them as good or better than I ever could. A few even come over to play with my dogs from time to time.

Thankyou,I'm sure glad someone has spoke out on this site,as all dogs are equal and can give their owners many hours of love and companionship no matter if purbred or not.All are God's creatures and most on this site puts the Purebred dogs above all others and call a mixed breed a Mutt. That is like saying that someone that is rich is better than someone that is poor, and I think God made us all the same,no one is better than anyone else. Thanks for bringing this matter to all on this site's attention.Expect to get some doozies on this site,as some think they're no it alls.

I have nothing against mutts. I do have a problem with people mixing dog breeds on purpose and selling those dogs for hundreds of dollars when in reality all they are is a mutt. There are too many dogs in the shelters and on the streets to be making more mutts that people may decide they don't want after a few years because they won't be trendy anymore. Some of the best dogs I have owned were mutts.

I don't think there is anything wrong with mutts either, nor pure breds. All of my dogs, except one, have been mutts and they have been some of the nicest and cutest dogs ever. I prefer always getting my animals from shelters or rescue group since they need homes and are on a time schedule since they are put to sleep after only 2 weeks in my state.
I do find it sickening though when people refuse to get a mutt because they seem to think they aren't good enough. It's not the pure breds that are in shelters awaiting a death sentence, it's the mixed breeds.

Exactly what jess said - no one has a problem with mutts - a mix can be a wonderful dog, I've had several and they were absolute gems and lived many years.
What any of us with knowledge of breeds object to is the so called "designer dogs" - you know the ones supposed to be "hypo-allergenic" etc., that back yard breeders and puppy mills turn out to try to get a lot of cash out of clueless dog buyers.
There are so many marvelous mixed breeds looking for homes, in shelters, at the ASPCA, the Humane society, rescues, that it is positively sickening to breed more mixed breeds.
Anyone can find a terrific dog that suits them perfectly without spending a fortune and in doing so, give a mixed breed, or mutt, a good home.
Don't think this is status consciousness, it is not.
I rescue a particular breed, dachshund, but will gladly take a dachshund mix in if I have foster home room and I would be very happy if there were not more "pedigrees" that needed rescue - ever.
All we are trying to get across to the general public is not to buy anything from puppy mills or back yard breeders, not pedigrees, not mutts.
If no one buys, they will stop breeding these pathetic creatures in deplorable conditions and so many won't end up being in kill shelters eventually.

I have never gotten down on anyone for owning a mutt. I have a great mutt and a great Akc Akita as well. Mutts are wonderful dogs.
The only thing I get down on people for is breeding irresponsibly, feeding grocery store food that is like giving your kids candy everyday and not taking care of their pets. Weather you have a mix breed or and akc dog means nothing. What dose mean something is taking care of your pet and being resposible and spay and nuetuering. I do hate the fact that they are breeding AKC dogs to make these so called designer dogs now. I can not stand that but that is a whole different story there.
Who care if you own a mutt they are great!!

I quite often read the Q's on here but don't bother answering.
When I first came on I was appalled at the way many people answered questions, even ones I thought were relatively harmless, some people were downright rude.
BUT
The longer I spend reading the increasingly stupid questions I now understand why some of the people on here get so dam annoyed, I really don't think it's about hating mutts or looking down on them.
It's more about stupid people saying "I've got a teacup blah blah and want to mate it with a St Bernard"!
These people are serious! That's scarey!
So I think unfortunately anyone that says I've got a yorkiepoo or something similar does get shot down in flames giving the impression people look down on mutts.
They don't, they're just sick of people who know nothing breeding more unwanted dogs.

the wolf is not the only type of "pure breed". Check back to the egyptian times of the sight hounds and other countries "original" dogs. Mutts are no different (in my opinion) than any pure breed. It all depends on how they are raised. Some breeds shouldn't be mixed due to breed traits but they are still dogs none the less.

Anybody who looks down on you for that reason is not worth the time, emotion or energy. I've had both mutts and purebreds and loved them both the same and really don't care what anyone thinks. I prefer that people don't breed their mixed breed dogs, but after that I love em all the same.

Nobody has a problem with the dogs, they had no more choice in who their parents were than you did.
Because there are far more than enough "mutts" born every year by accident many of us feel that it is ridiculous to be breeding more of them on purpose.
Most of us that breed dogs but are critical of some breeding practices only breed to satisfy a purpose, ie, dogs for hunting, dogs for herding, etc, etc, and do not breed just to supply the world with "pets".

Mutts are the best dogs. They have fewer inherited problems, such as hip displacia, blindness, etc., that are associated with many pure breeds. Also, they are typically more even tempered. Plus, you can usually get a mutt for FREE, while you'll pay WAYYY too much for a pure bred (typically).
