I just recently read an article that claimed using sunscreen can cause more damage than good. It claimed that in order for it to work, you need to re-apply every hour. And since most people don't re-apply as directed, you are just creating more radicals that cause cancer. Is there any truth to this?

What you need is to buy a broad spectrum sun screen that covers both the UVA and UVB spectrum. Currently the SPF ratings only apply to the UVB rays so even if you are using SPF 60 but with no UVA coverage, your skin is still getting damaged.

Sun exposure rules would vary depending on what part of the globe you are located. Generally speaking, if you live in the NW US as your profile indicates, applying sunscreen every 2-3 hours will be plenty often as long as you are not going swimming. If you live in a southern latitude like Florida, Arizona, or southern Texas, then you can not be too careful when out in the bright sun and hourly applications might be necessary to help prevent UV damage.

There is NO truth that using sunscreen can cause more harm than good. It is true, however, that many sunscreens should be re-applied every hour, since they get diluted by sweating and lose their effectiveness, and that most need re-applying after you have been in the water. But even poor use is better than not using them at all and getting burned.

You do have to re-apply sunscreen. Not every hour though. I know everyone hates using something higher than 15, but 30+ is the best to use. And any sunscreen that protects against UVA rays as well as UVB rays. You have to read all the labels on any sunscreen inorder for it to work right.

Far more people are diagnosed with skin cancer caused by sun damage than with some other cancer that may have been influenced by the use of sun screen.

There are always risks associated with our actions, a sensible person weighs one risk against the other, and uses sunscreen
