Parents have.
We are all born atheists. Nobody believes in a god until the indoctrination takes place.
But once the child's mind is contaminated, I think the foolishness of religion drives open minded people to become sensible again.

i think i became and atheist when i logically thought about how stupid Christianity is, and then science came into the scene and made me more confident on my chose.

Death and destruction created in the name of religion.
The use of religion to dominate and gain power.
Corruption.
more recently Islam and its use to try and gain world dominance. ( I am not saying it is to blame just that it is being used by man to fight and punish western cultures )

In my case it was religion and the bible. I used science to confirm my suspicions.

religion due to all the acts of the church done in the name of god.i mean wars,corruption to name but 2,and they keep getting away with it.But very soon god will act and put an end to false religion.
